Not many people get a $16.1 million birthday present. But Harry Behmerwohld turned 88 years old on Thursday, and Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) Director Mike Tooley wished Behmerwohld a happy birthday with a big present, dedicating the recently-completed Heron bridge. Behmerwohld was 22 at the dedication ceremony of the first Heron bridge in 1952. Back then he was newly married, and Behmerwohld said having a bridge connecting Heron to the rest of the world meant a lot to the...
Did that majestic bull elk just tip its crowned head, with seven gnarly royal points on each side, ever so slightly? Is he really preparing to bugle, to stake his deep-throated, high-pitched, primal claim to the bevy of cows undoubtedly standing nearby? Is he itching for a fight; announcing his presence the way macho, male elk do and waiting for the other biggest and baddest bulls around to determine who is really best and earns the right to pass on his, and only his, genetics to the next genera...

In December, the Sanders County Commissioners chose to consolidate the positions of Sanders County Clerk and Recorder and county Treasurer/Superintendent of Sch...
In all, America has celebrated 242 Independence Days. After all this time, you would think we had all the details ironed out. Did you know that the 4th of July is not the actual day that America gained independence from Great Britain? According to historians at George Mason University, the actual day was July 2, 1776. “This day the Continental Congress declared the United Colonies Free and Independent States,” printed the Pennsylvania Evening Post, on July 2, 1776 announcing that American freedom had been attained. July 4 was actually the day...
HISTORY OF HOT SPRINGS The story of Hot Springs goes back long before the establishment of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Reservation, and the opening of the reservation to homesteaders in 1910. The Pend d'Oreille Indians knew of the healing waters even before trappers and settlers discovered them, and called them "Big Medicine." The Flathead, Kalispell, Pend d'Oreille and Kootenai Indians occupied the Little Bitterroot River Valley long before European-American trappers and traders moved...
Editor, In response to an article (in the Missoulian) about Chicago Peak in the Cabinet Wilderness Area being a Kootenai Indian Vision Quest site and the possibility of it being a national historic site so that no presence of any mine or construction being able to commerce operations. I am wondering if a vision quest site in the Thompson Falls area (near sheep viewing site) would shut down future highway construction or ever have traffic drive by it. Maybe the state would have to reroute Highway 200 in order to protect it. Professor Carling...

It is not a "wilderness group," but their interest in the continued reasonable use of wild lands is second on their priority list. Presently, the number one goal of Cube Iron Cataract Coalition (CICC) is to create awareness of the backcountry mix of roadless areas, connecting backcountry, and lands bordering National Forest. Membership and support from the group enjoys an overlap with the Backcountry Horsemen, Montana Wilderness Association and Montana Backcountry Hunters and Anglers – many o...
Based on the amount of local business support and involvement, it will be a block party to remember. Highlead Saloon is organizing a Summer Party for Saturday, July 7 from 4-8 p.m., and the parking lot that supports Christmas on Main Street will host the event with hot weather, instead of hot chocolate. “A lot of this is up in the air at this point. But based on the interest from businesses and organizations who want to be present, there will be plenty to do for all ages,” said Highlead’s Cody Mosher, who noted that for the event the Sheri...
The lowering of the Clark Fork River is evident from Silcox Mountain above Thompson Falls. NorthWestern Energy continues to lower the water level so that the dam can be repaired after spring's high water. Steel pillway beams were removed to allow for the higher flows with runoff. Now that the high water has peaked, the river must be lowered to allow crews to replace the beams....
As summertime temperatures heat up and the chance to cool down in the water arrives, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is reminding people that building dams in creeks and streams can have negative consequences for fish. This is especially true for species such as bull trout, which ascend small tributaries in late-summer to spawn. In recent years, FWP has noticed an increasing number of dams being built in small streams. These harmful features are often built near campgrounds, most likely to pool water for swimming. Dams are also often found at...

Thompson Falls will be on the silver screen after a film crew spent last week shooting scenes for an independent film. The crew started in Helena, moved over to Wyoming for a couple days and then came back across Montana, ending up in Thompson Falls on June 27. Thompson Falls is one of the last film locations for the crew. "The story is about healing," said Zac Titus, who co-wrote the film and also plays the...
The Cabinet Ranger District is unique. It is the home to a 94,000-acre wilderness area known as Cabinet Mountain Wilderness. Most Forest Service districts do not contain a wilderness area within its boundaries, much less one that was designated in 1964 when the Wilderness Act originated. Wilderness areas comprise less than five percent of America's land base. These areas are managed to limit natural resource altering activities, by preserving the resource in its natural state as much as...
It was the third year for the Local Yokel's Car & Truck Show at Ripples Ice Cream Parlor in Plains, but the first time the sponsors had a People's Choice Award for the top vehicle, which went to Plains resident Wally Logan and his 1941 Chevy pickup. Logan did all the work himself, except for the paint job, including the pickup bed, which is featured with red oak, locust and mahogany wood. Winning the People's Choice means Logan's vehicle will be on the cover of the 2019 show poster. Twenty...
