    Jul 6, 2023

by Shannon Brown and Jennifer Curran Fridays are market time in Plains. Fred Young Park is the new place to wander around and check out vendors. The number of vendors has not reached full capacity for this venue. The market has room to grow in this new location. Manager Linda Wilson said that she thinks it will get bigger since they moved it from the parking lot by the 406 Store on Main Street. She hopes to have live music. "If anyone wants to show up and play (music), they are welcome," Wilson...

Mayor Chris Allen said they had about a dozen applicants to serve as lifeguards, but could not get them certified. There are three lifeguards for the kiddie pool, which is free and open Monday through Saturday 1-5 p.m. "I feel horrible about it. I wanted it open. It's a good opportunity for young kids to work...

  • MOOSE ON THE LOOSE

    Annie Wooden|Jul 6, 2023

The City of Thompson Falls had an unusual visitor Sunday morning. A moose found its way downtown about 8:30 a.m. The moose was first spotted by Sanders County Sheriff's deputy Tim Kelly in Rose Garden Park along Main Street. "It's the first one I've ever seen in town," Kelly said. The moose then went up the east ramp over the railroad tracks, where it turned around on Preston Avenue and headed south back over the railroad tracks on Main Street. The moose then found its way to the river, where...

  • T. Falls kicks off holiday celebrations

    Jennifer Curran|Jul 6, 2023

No fireworks needed for this Independence Day celebration. With colorful displays of craftsmanship, artistry, musical talents and activities; there was something there for everyone. It was the third annual Independence Day festival at Ainsworth Park on Saturday, put on by Thompson Falls Main Street. The first was in 2021 just a week after the park opened. A beautiful sunny day was only interrupted slightly by wind gusts that sent a few of the vendors' canopies and materials flying. Community...

  • The ongoing quest for more knowledge

    Annie Wooden|Jul 6, 2023

Whether it’s a serious news story with the latest investigation update or an edgy meme featuring orcas and video-game controllers, we are inundated right now with information about the Titan submersible. There has been no shortage of coverage on the investigation of what went wrong as the deep-water vessel attempted to descend to the wreck of the Titanic, more than 12,000 feet below sea level. Of all the questions being asked right now, though, the one that has struck me from the very beginning is “Why?” I don’t mean “Why did the vessel im...

  • Montana Viewpoint: Celebrating America

    Jim Elliott|Jul 6, 2023

We celebrate America on this Fourth of July because we are a great nation with great dreams, great ability and great heart. None should feel this more than Montanans, who cherish the notions that “all men is common folk,” (as an old poem has it), that a person’s word is their bond, and that it doesn’t matter who you are as long as you pull your own weight. A place where, when your house burns down, people you don’t even know show up to help you out. We are big hearted, tough and kind. And we do...

  • Now is the time to comment

    Jul 6, 2023

The Northwestern Energy (NWE) Thompson Falls Hydro facility is working on the renewal of their Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license. The last license was issued in 1979. I believe NWE has been and will continue to be excellent stewards of the Clark Fork River and surrounding lands, but with the new license proposal there are a few items of concern. The previous license allowed NWE to draft (lower) the reservoir level up to four feet at any given time. Over the last 45 years or so, NWE chose not to use the 4 foot draft as a normal...

  • Remember When?

    Sherry Hagerman-Benton|Jul 6, 2023

6 YEARS AGO • JULY 11, 1918 NEWS OF LOCAL INTEREST Fishing has been unusually good in the streams of this vicinity during the past week and has attracted a large number who have been daring enough to brave the mosquitoes. One local Isaak Walton says that on Thompson River Saturday he had to take his flies out of his pocket because the fish were jumping in after them. He then put the flies in his basket, swung it out over the stream and in a short time had his 25 pounds of trout without getting his feet wet. Can you beat it? 107 YEARS AGO ...

Meyer, who turned 99 on June 12, said nothing was going to stop her from attending the reunion or getting up to the third floor, where the center set up a typical classroom display with photographs, books, team pictures, desks, chairs and other artifacts from the...
