  • Property, income tax rebates available

    Shannon Brown|Jul 13, 2023

Property taxes have gone up but there is a possible solution. Starting August 15, 2023, taxpayers who own property can apply for a rebate on their 2022 taxes. This can be as much as $675 for a primary residence in both 2023 and 2024. But qualifying residents need to reapply in 2024. To qualify for the property rebate persons must have owned and lived in their Montana residence for at least seven months in 2022. Property taxes must have been billed on their Montana property, and they must have paid property taxes on that residence. The deadline...

    Shannon Brown|Jul 13, 2023

Marilyn Stonehocker, formerly of Thompson Falls, had her first book published in 2022. It wasn't a lifelong plan. But it was her lifelong experiences that brought it together, including some of her popular recipes that include doughnuts. Stonehocker started writing when she had to sit for 35 days in 2012 while in the cancer treatment center in Washington where her husband underwent a stem cell transplant. She couldn't leave due to contamination so Stonehocker decided to spend her time writing...

  • Student has eye for art

    Jul 13, 2023

by Karen Thorson Whether a quote from William Shakespeare, Leonardo Da Vinci, or the philosopher Cicero – no one really knows – "The eyes are a window to the soul" would resonate with April Keiscome, a 14-year-old eighth grader at Noxon School. Keiscome, like most artists, has a favorite subject for her art – in her case eyes. She works both in sketching with pencil/pen and, beginning in the sixth grade, painting with acrylics. She feels eyes reveal emotion – seriousness, sadness, joy, surpris...

  • KNF to switch to electronic mail

    Jul 13, 2023

The Kootenai National Forest will be transitioning to electronic mailing lists, rather than postal mail, for all updates regarding forest management projects. This move should reduce costs, lessen environmental impacts, and further outreach planning information. Additionally, electronic delivery provides immediate access to downloadable project documents that are then easy to share with others while also reducing the number of unwanted letters and extra copies of large documents. Beginning mid-July, the forest will start utilizing the...
