  • Commissioners review marijuana resolution

    Annie Wooden|Jul 28, 2022

Sanders County Commissioners last week reviewed a resolution they plan to have on the November ballot for county voters. Resolution No. 2022-06 details the county’s intent to have voters decide whether or not to tax recreational and medical marijuana sales at the county level. House Bill 701 passed by the Montana Legislature allows counties to impose a 3% tax on marijuana sales, but the measure must be passed by the voters in the county. HB701 applies only to counties in which the majority of voters voted to approve Initiative 190 in the 2...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Jul 28, 2022

I met someone recently and after striking up a conversation, quickly found out that she had moved to the area about a year ago. Being the curious person that I am, I asked about her background. I always like hearing people’s stories of how they found themselves in a certain place. When I asked this person where she moved from, she whispered, “California,” and I wondered, “Why the whisper? Was she nervous? Worried?” Whatever the reason, I assured her that it was wonderful and welcomed her to Montana. I like to joke that I was born in a barn in...

  • A Few Thoughts

    Sandy Compton|Jul 28, 2022

You may have heard someone say, “That person is a real character,” generally in reference to a guy or gal who is somewhat, or very — ummm — unique. Some folks achieve status as a real character without even thinking about it, but should you yourself ever want to become a real character, several qualities are required. Some are inborn and some are acquired. Which are which, I’ve not determined, and I’m not sure it matters. To become a real character, one needs luck, a talent, a passion for something, the ability to live on air and an initial...

Terry Duffy almost lost his life while crossing with a team of horses on the ferry. The horses became nervous and went off the end of the ferry, almost dragging Terry with them. At tha...

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, mosquitoes are more than just hungry, unwanted backyard guests. In fact, mosquito-borne diseases, including the Zika virus, the West Nile virus and dengue, pose significant threats. While not all mosquitoes carry disease, even those that don't can...

My mother used to take my older brother and I down to swim nearly every day that she could. Once I had turned eight years old my parents allowed me to ride my bicycle down to the boat launch and swim during the daylight hours of most days as long as I was home before sundown. During the summers of my childhood my parents lovingly refe...
