  • Building for Bees

    Ed Moreth|Aug 8, 2024

A group of children helped local bees last weekend by making them artificial shelters, compliments of the Eastern County Conservation District and the Green Mountain Conservation District. This was the first time the two county entities teamed up with Studs Building and Home in Plains to construct the six-foot tall and four-foot wide bee houses. Six girls and three boys from 5-13 years old and one adult, all from Plains, took part in the bee house project, which was headed by Emily Baker of the...

  • Former TF coach honored

    Skye Hill|Aug 8, 2024

Anyone who graduated from Thompson Falls High School is familiar with the name Randy Symon. Whether he was your elementary PE teacher, your coach, or taught you how to drive, Randy Symon was there. But getting nominated for the Montana Coaches Association Hall of Fame had never been on the front of the retired Thompson Falls Track and Field coach's mind, until two lifelong friends took it into their own hands and got to work. "Everyone said this award was something that should have been done a...

  • McNamara picks scorpion for pocket pet 4-H project

    Ed Moreth|Aug 8, 2024

Judges might be a little hesitant about getting too close to one 4-H member's entry at the Sanders County Fair competition on Aug. 29. "It's kinda fun when their eyes get real big, but it's kinda nice when they edge a little closer," said 11-year-old John McNamara of the South Side Sparks club, who has shown a tarantula and a snake for his pocket pet project in past years and judges were reluctant to get close to his projects, let alone hold them. This year, McNamara has several projects - photo...

  • Our Viewpoint: Help keep our local wildlife wild

    Annie Wooden|Aug 8, 2024

Last week as I was walking down Main Street in Thompson Falls, distracted by waving at someone driving by, I nearly ran into a doe huddled in some shade just off the sidewalk. It shocked me and I jumped back a bit as the deer just stood there. (As a side note, one thing that's important to know about me is that my brother and his best friend told me that deer were aliens and that's why their eyes glowed. It still influences me to this day.) Finally the deer just stepped aside a bit, but never was bothered by me being there. Later that day, I...

  • Sunday's Snapshots: Ripples

    Sunday Dutro|Aug 8, 2024

When she was a puppy, I could smoosh my nose into our dogs’ paws and inhale corn chips. I could stuff my nose into the scruff of her neck and smell sunlight and grass and a touch of joy. But somewhere along the way, she lost her puppy smell and gained a stink. We added those green doggie toothbrushes, but it wasn’t her breath that needed fixing, and the treats didn’t seem to affect anything anyway. We started bathing the dogs every week, which decreased the number of dog-hair-tumbleweeds rolling through the house, but still didn’t take her sme...

  • Water issues concern ranchers

    Shannon Brown|Aug 8, 2024

Water may be a hot commodity in Montana, increasingly so during these dry summers and low snowpack winters. Sanders County residents who own property on the Flathead Reservation also must adjust to changing water restrictions. Ranchers concerned with irrigation restrictions in the Hot Springs area are faced with even more restrictions according to Koshon LaCounte, the Flathead Indian Irrigation Project North Division Supervisor. He said availability of water has affected allotments this year. “Winter has not replenished the water. It carried o...

  • Real Estate Trends

    Tina Daugherty|Aug 8, 2024

July was a sudden scorcher! The meteorologist seems to have the best job on the planet, as he has been paid to be pretty egregiously incorrect quite often this season (apologies to any meteorologists out there). May the huckleberries be benefitting from these last few nice rains. As to the real estate market, the inventory is still growing, but it is still at a much slower rate seasonally. Those low interest rate loans are hard to part with when you have to start over with a much higher rate. The sales were down for both land and homes for the...

  • Whatcha Readin'?

    Sunday Dutro|Aug 8, 2024

Usually, I read more frivolous and fun books in the summer, and I used to think it was because that’s what I wanted to read, but now I’m beginning to think it’s simply because that’s what’s published and available to me at that time of year. I’m curious, how does it work for you? Do you prefer quick and dirty books, what I call “page turners,” like those by John Grisham, Colleen Hoover, and Emily Henry, or deeply engrossing books, what I call “think traps,” like those by Barbara Kingsolver, Elena Ferrante, and Abraham Verghese? Do your t...
