The Thorne Creek fire seems to just keep going and going and going. A moving, growing, often glowing fixture on the landscape in the mountains north of Thompson Falls for over 40 days now, the Thorne Creek blaze, which was ignited by lightning on July 7, saved some of its most explosive runs for last week, burning over 6,000 acres Sunday and almost 4,000 more Monday to arrive at its current estimated acreage of 35,993. Notes from Monday night's infrared mapping flight indicated that large smoke...

The Sanders County Sewer District at Paradise board continues to plan for its new sewer system and though opposition also continues, the community division is getting narrower, according to Terry Caldwell, who conducted the sewer board meeting Friday. "My goal is to bring the community together - the board, Bridger and the community, because we're all neighbors and friends, and that's important to me," said Caldwell, who ran the meeting in the absence of Sunny Chase, the board president. Chase...
Now that kids are getting ready to head back to school is as good a time as any for a little reminder to treat people with kindness. You don't know what someone is going through, what their background is or what training they've had. It takes a while to get to know someone and figure out why they think or act or speak the way they do. Treating each other with compassion and respect is not human nature anymore. Being combative and seeing things as one way or the other with no compromise seems to be the new norm. After more than a year of a...
Editor, Nothing is free. The television we watch is paid for by those that advertise on this media. Logic would have it that you who watch these ads will purchase these items. The reasoning would be the sales would exceed the cost of the advertisement. The pharmaceutical companies, in days long gone by, sold Alca Seltzer, Bromo Seltzer, Bayer Aspirin, Pepto Bismal, etc. as over-the-counter products. You want it, you could buy it. Today we are informed of a plethora of drugs that treat unnumbered kinds of ailment. The catch is only a doctor can...
“We have met the enemy and they are us." — Pogo Possum I am reminded more and more of my belief that the single attribute that sets humans apart from other creatures is that we are the only species capable of causing our own extinction. The ways we are currently dealing with COVID and global warming may validate that belief sooner than later. It was once commonplace to distinguish humans from other species by saying humans were rational thinkers. After observing the irrationality of human thinki...
LOOKOUTS IN SANDERS COUNTY It's hard to believe there were 82 lookouts in Sanders County. As a matter of fact, Montana's first two Forest Service lookouts were built in Sanders County. The first lookout stations to be established were Squaw Peak and Mount Silcox. There are a multitude of fire lookout designs and types used over the years. Very early lookouts were constructed mostly of wood or logs and didn't follow any uniform design as they were made with whatever materials were on the site at...

During the pandemic, the community sought out help from the library as many a...

However, at 87 years old and with worsening Parkinson's disease, Netz has decided to move back closer to family in Albuquerque, New Mexico. "It's so beautiful here, it reminds me of northern...
