  • Emphasize the constitution

    Sep 16, 2021

This Friday, September 17, is Constitution Day, when our Constitution of the United States was adopted. When I was a student at Thompson Falls schools, you had to learn the preamble to the Constitution and had to recite it quite frequently. I don’t think enough education or emphasis is being put on our Constitution and the importance of our Constitution, especially now when we are so divided. We have the freedom and the education. Everyone needs to know what we are standing for. "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more p...

  • FWP sees increased bear activity

    Sep 16, 2021

With the arrival of fall, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) staff are busy responding to bear conflicts and working with the public to prevent conflicts. To date, FWP reports most of the reported conflicts in northwest Montana have involved bears getting into unsecured garbage and livestock feed, hanging around homes feeding on green grass and clover, and killing small livestock, such as chickens and pigs. FWP staff work with landowners on electric fencing, loaning out bear-resistant garbage containers, and securing attractants with the...

  • Plains passes budget, receives ARPA funds

    Ed Moreth|Sep 16, 2021

The Plains Town Council last week approved the 2021/2022 fiscal year budget of just over $8-million, an increase of 16% from last year's budget. Four council members - Chris Allen, the council president, Connie Foust, Joel Banham, and Chad Cantrell from his home on the phone - unanimously approved the budget at last Tuesday's meeting at City Hall. The council approved the preliminary budget in June and later held a public hearing, but few people attended, according to Mayor Dan Rowan. The...

  • Vet clinic expands in county

    Ed Moreth|Sep 16, 2021

There's a new veterinary clinic in Plains with a new name, but she's no stranger to faces of Sanders County - human or animal. Dr. Abby Ingram of Thompson Falls Veterinary Clinic has decided to expand her services to Plains, buying the practice of Dr. Alan Marley, who recently retired. The official purchase date was Sept. 3, but Ingram and her staff have been filling in at the site of the Lynch Creek Animal Clinic for two or three days a week. Now, under the name Wild Horse Veterinary Clinic,...

  • Plains mayor lifts water restrictions

    Ed Moreth|Sep 16, 2021

The mayor of Plains declared at last week’s council meeting that he was rescinding the mandatory water restrictions now that the area has had some cooler days and precipitation. At the same time, council members passed the second reading of the “Emergency Ordinance and Ordinance to Adopt Procedure to Reduce Water Use During Emergency Conditions.” With the new ordinance approved and in place, the town would not have to go through the time of voting on it again; the mayor has the authority to renew water restrictions in the future. The first...

  • Hawks 'ruthless' against Mission

    John Dowd|Sep 16, 2021

Trae Thilmony started off Thompson Falls with a 20-yard run then another five to make a touchdown in last Saturday's game against the Mission Bulldogs. The senior's score was just the first of what Thompson Falls High School football coach Jared Koskela called "ruthless." Thompson Falls came out on top, 63-6, bulldozing the Bulldogs. By the end of the first quarter, the Hawks were up 14 -6 and had tripled that score by halftime to 44-6. Thilmony would go on to gain 74 yards over the course of...

  • Savage Heat 3-0 after Friday night shutout

    Annie Wooden|Sep 16, 2021

The Hot Springs Savage heat dominated the North Star Knights Friday. Hot Springs ran away with a 55-0 shutout at home, and Coach Jim Lawson said his team ran the ball pretty well. “It’s hard to get a shutout in 6-Man,” he said. “North Star has some good kids and they put up a good fight.” Lawson said the game against the Knights, who traveled from Rudyard, was a good chance to get everyone on the Savage Heat team some more experience, noting that the younger players got a lot of playing time in the second half. Hot Springs played well on b...

  • Red Devils improve in win

    Annie Wooden|Sep 16, 2021

The Red Devils went on the road and brought home their first win of the season last week, besting the Refiners at Sunburst 32-15. “It’s always nice to get a win,” said Noxon Coach Bart Haflich. “We played better on defense. Hopefully we keep improving on both sides of the ball.” Seniors Cade VanVleet and Treven Monagen scored two touchdowns each for the Red Devils, with VanVleet scoring on a 10-yard run in the first quarter and a 9-yard run in the third. Monagen connected on a 7-yard reception from quarterback Derreck Christensen in the secon...

    Annie Wooden|Sep 16, 2021

  • Lady Hawks finding their rhythm

    Annie Wooden|Sep 16, 2021

The Lady Hawks hit the road Saturday for a double header against Deer Lodge and Anaconda. The Hawks beat Deer Lodge in four and lost to Anaconda in four. Coach Sandra Kazmierczak said both teams were tough opponents and the Hawks were able to try some players in new positions. Junior Ellie Baxter, in her first season with the volleyball team, stepped up as a setter for the Hawks and Kazmierczak was impressed with her performance. Baxter completed 11 set assists against Deer Lodge and 16 against Anaconda. Kazmierczak also noted that senior...

  • COVID postpones local activities

    Annie Wooden|Sep 16, 2021

Though life seemed to be getting back to normal with the return of the school year and fall sporting events, some Sanders County teams have had to take a break because of the increase in COVID cases. Plains High School canceled extracurricular activities last week, including a scheduled volleyball match against Noxon last Thursday and a football game against Flint Creek last Saturday. The cross country team was also unable to travel to the Flathead Invitational last weekend, and Coach Jesse Jermyn said his runners will see their first action...

  • TF board addresses COVID, expansion

    John Dowd|Sep 16, 2021

The board room was filled to capacity at Monday’s meeting of the Thompson Falls School Board. The unusually high attendance was in part to the introduction of several new teachers who were attending the meeting. It was also due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in school and the community. One community member spoke to the board, commending their work on implementing a mask mandate in the school bus system by the athletic staff. Superintendent Bud Scully addressed the comment, clarifying that the coordination was just for athletes t...
