  • BRIDGE INSPECTION

    Sep 17, 2020

Bridge inspectors from Extreme Access Inc., traveled from Idaho last Thursday to complete a safety inspection on the High Bridge in Thompson Falls. Scott Coleman, one of the three inspectors, said Extreme Access Inc. does a full inspection on the bridge every 10 years. "We inspect the entire bridge," Coleman said. "We look for any kind of deficiencies such as cracking, erosion, or any kind of bending." Coleman said it takes his team the entire day to do a full inspection on this bridge. "The...

  • TF School Board reviews salary schedule

    John Dowd|Sep 17, 2020

The Thompson Falls School Board is working on a new salary schedule for their administration. The new schedule will decide how much and how often the administrative employees’ salaries will increase over the years. According to Superintendent Bud Scully, who has been working on the proposal, “it is normal to have a salary schedule for all employees, and all of the other staff already have a salary schedule at Thompson Falls, however the administration does not.” Scully has been researching pay rates for similar schools, however, is having diffi...

  • Blue Hawks blast Black Hawks 52-0

    John Hamilton|Sep 17, 2020

It's not just COVID-19 now; it's also this blasted smoke. Already battling the impositions instituted by the implementation of COVID-19 rules, coach Jared Koskela and his No. 4 ranked Blue Hawks were left wondering if they would be able to host the Darby Tigers later this week. The Hawks moved to 3-0 on the season with a 52-0 thrashing of Seeley-Swan at Previs Friday. For their part, the Tigers defeated Victor 30-22 in Darby Saturday. Unhealthy levels of wildfire smoke from numerous blazes...

  • Anaconda scraps past Lady Hawks

    John Hamilton|Sep 17, 2020

The Lady Hawks may have lost to Anaconda Saturday at TFHS gym, but you will not hear coach Sandra Kazmierczak complaining about it. In fact, it was just the opposite. "Wasn't that a great match?" she asked. "Anaconda is a very solid team with a good bench. We played well but they played a little better. We will take this as a positive learning experience and move on; we will be fine, we just need to keep playing together." Moving on this week means hosting Plains Tuesday (results of that match w...

  • Big Game Time

    John Hamilton|Sep 17, 2020

It’s big game time in Montana 6-Man football. With both teams hoping to strike an early blow for playoff position, the 2-0 Hot Springs Savage Heat, fresh off a 51-0 road conquest of the Gardiner Bruins, will host the 1-0 Noxon Red Devils Friday night in the Spa City. Coach Bart Haflich and his Devils had the week off last week, giving the West End boys time to ponder ways to finally get to the elusive Savage Heat, who have fairly well dominated the series since Noxon moved down to the 6-Man level five years ago. Interestingly, Noxon had a...

  • Plains miscues help Charlo

    John Hamilton|Sep 17, 2020

The Plains Horsemen have an official bye this week; the rest of the teams in this part of the world may have had unofficial byes by the time the weekend ends. Originally scheduled to play at Ennis, coach Eddie Fultz and his Horsemen had that game cancelled before the season even began, but Fultz thinks it may not matter anyway. “The way it looks right now, everybody could be sidelined this weekend,” he said in view of the heavy wildfire smoke blanketing western Montana. “We lost the game with Ennis due to all non-conference games being canceled...

  • Vikings ease past Savage Heat

    John Hamilton|Sep 17, 2020

The Hot Springs Lady Savage Heat took one on the chin, after their leader, Katelyn Christensen took one to the nose. In an early-season matchup of District 14C contenders, the Charlo Vikings stopped the Savage Heat 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, 25-15 in Hot Springs Saturday. Along the way, early in the match, with Hot Springs playing well, Christensen took a hard spike to the face and suffered a bloody nose, which forced her to the sidelines for a time. “That kind of took the wind out of our sails, sort of ruined our mojo for a while there,” Hot Spr...

    Sep 17, 2020

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) will continue chronic wasting disease (CWD) surveillance this year in high-priority areas known as Priority Surveillance Areas in northwest, southwest and eastern Montana. Hunters who harvest a deer, elk or moose in these areas are asked to voluntarily submit their animal for sampling to help gather additional data for that area. This information will be used to help inform the best management strategies for the affected hunting districts. This year, FWP will not have transportation restriction zones or CWD...

  • Grow habitat that's good for pollinators

    Sanders County Ledger|Sep 17, 2020

When you imagine what “habitat” looks like, what comes to mind? For me, it is easy to picture the forested mountains and numerous rivers and streams of Sanders County, which many fish and wildlife species call home. However, for many pollinator species, you do not have to look any further than your own backyard. Pollinators, like bees, butterflies and moths, live in a wide variety of habitats and rely on many different food sources. When these species visit a flower for its pollen or nectar, they may unwittingly brush against the flo...

  • EERIE SKIES

    Sep 17, 2020

Smoke from wildfires in Washington, Oregon and California made its way to the Clark Fork Valley last weekend. The thick smoke obstructed the normal mountain views of the area, causing diminished air quality throughout the county. On Saturday, air quality in Thompson Falls was listed as hazardous. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had increased to unhealthy, which at that level the Environmental Protection Agency recommends people reduce prolonged or heavy exertion and consider taking more breaks...
