  • Plains volunteers help neighbors with cleanup

    Ed Moreth|Sep 21, 2023

Yard work can be hard work, but that didn't stop a group of volunteers from spending their Saturday helping those in need with their yards. It was all part of the Plains Fall Cleanup Day and the volunteers tackled everything from mowing to gutter cleaning. The Plains Beautification Committee got only 22 volunteers, half as many as the spring cleanup in May, but they had a lot of young people helping this time, including nearly the entire Ercanbrack family - Emory, 17, Kalem, 15, Annika, 13, and...

  • Fair board reviews events

    Annie Wooden|Sep 21, 2023

The Sanders County Fair Board met last week to recap the 2023 fair. More than a dozen community members showed up to the board meeting last Wednesday at the fairgrounds. “It was a very challenging summer for us,” board chairman Randy Woods stated. “We had a hard time finding summer help and some of the fences didn’t get fixed right and coolers didn’t get fixed.” Woods also stated the fair had issues with a phone line that affected an ATM. He also noted that the River Road East Fire prompted some people to not show up, though there was no thre...

  • CUSTOM CREATION

    Ed Moreth|Sep 21, 2023

A member of the Plains Library chess club is making his own chess set, but it's not going to help him win. Gary Olson is crafting handmade glass chess pieces to give away to the winner of an upcoming chess tournament. "I wanted to do something special for the club," said Olson, who has competed with the club since it began in March, but instead of competing, he's going to help referee the tournaments. Olson finished the last two queens last Thursday. "It's a beautiful gift and it's something the...

  • TF students brighten lift station

    Annie Wooden|Sep 21, 2023

As work continues on phases 1 and 2 of the wastewater project in Thompson Falls, there's a new highlight. Thompson Falls High School students worked last week to complete a mural on the side of a sewer lift station that sits just above the railroad tracks between the East and West ramps. Teacher Micah Grossberg and his Art 1 class took advantage of a late-summer warm day last Wednesday and painted the mural that depicts a series of pipes. The students spent the entire school day first prepping...

  • Appreciate what others do for us

    Annie Wooden|Sep 21, 2023

I was at the Sanders County Fair every day this year for various reasons. On Thursday my mom and I judged entries in the 4-H Home Ec building, Friday I volunteered for the Fair Foundation in the beer booth, and Saturday and Sunday I was there covering various events for the newspaper. I felt like I was at the fair a lot this year, though definitely not as much as the 4-H families and vendors. The Sanders County Fair is pretty special in that admission is still free and the grounds are still covered in grass. The $10 daily parking fee is more...

  • A Few Thoughts ... on 58 visits to Nespelem

    Sandy Compton|Sep 21, 2023

Life is full right now. Time seems compressed, but on Saturday, I will take a day to travel to the Colville Reservation to visit a dried-up cemetery. I have written about this place and those buried here often, including this piece — slightly modified — for The River Journal, telling of my 40th visit to the grave of Joseph of the Nez Perce. I would apologize for repeating myself, but the message here bears repeating. Nespelem, Washington, October 25, 2014: There are few new buildings in Nespelem. Or newish, at least. Of note within the vil...

    Sherry Hagerman-Benton|Sep 21, 2023

9 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 20, 1933 ROADS IN MARVELOUS SHAPE Do you remember the way the roads were a couple of years back? Rough, rocky, bumpy, crooked and narrow. If you traveled over Montana roads much then you can hardly conceive as you glide along the oiled graded highways that are now evident that you are now in Montana. The Clarks Fork between Plains and Missoula, eighty miles, is now completed, graded, graveled, bridged with concrete, and now partially oiled. Before the year is out the entire stretch will be oiled. You skim along, smooth...

With the effect that the higher interest rates and housing prices have had on the affordability of housing, the prospect of owning a home might seem a bit out of reach. The Montana Board of Housing, or MBOH, has various benefits designed to help with bridging that gap of owning a home. Some of the benefits of using MBOH is that they have lower interest rates than that of conventional financing. Their regular loan program is currently at 5.75% versus the conventional mortgage rates of 7.625%. They have various programs that offer down payment an...
