If you are looking for a meal crafted with fresh, locally sourced ingredients giving that highly sought-after farm-to-table quality; look no further than The Foxhole Eatery. Located in Hot Springs, the new business opened in June of this year and hit the ground running. Staying true to her values, owner Heather Piper opened her business with the goal of finding ingredients for her dishes close to home. "We source our products as local as possible," Piper said. • County, MDT discuss Highway 135 speed

    John Dowd|Sep 23, 2021

The Sanders County Commissioners met with representatives from Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort, Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Montana House of Representatives to discuss the possibility of taking action to increase the safety of Montana Highway 135. The road connects Montana Highway 200 and Interstate 90 at St. Regis. With a speed limit of nearly 70 miles per hour throughout the stretch and with its twists and turns, the commissioners and Quinn’s argue that it has become a hazard. Quinn’s representatives stated that increased safet...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Sep 23, 2021

Do you feel that? Can you sense that in the air? I wish I was referring to the chilly fall mornings that are greeting us in Sanders County these days. No, I'm talking about the tension, the negativity and the uncertainty. Any public event or meeting these days has the potential to become a contentious debate. Whether it's about COVID closures or politics or funding or mandates or the lack of mandates, everything seems to be a conflict. The number of COVID cases in the county (120 as of Tuesday) is consistently higher than we've seen in the...

  • Stand up for community

    Sep 23, 2021

The recent resignation of Nick Lawyer from the Board of Public Health is a travesty of justice and counter to the overall well-being of our community. A bullying crowd of people attended a recent county commissioners’ meeting threatening commissioners and demanding the resignation of an excellent, thoughtful, community-minded medical practitioner from his position on this board. Nick has repeatedly and rightly informed and spoken out to support well-researched, medically sound practices. To ask for a resignation without this being on an a...

  • Knowing where we come from

    Sep 23, 2021

This past weekend I attended a fun gathering in Kalispell known as the Flathead Celtic Festival or Highland Games. The festival celebrates the history and contributions made by the Celtic people who originated from the countries of Scotland, Ireland, parts of France and the general area around Great Britain. These are the peoples who originally spoke the ancient language of Gaelic before the English language was forced upon them. If you are familiar with the television series Outlander where Jamie Frasier is constantly battling the English Red...

  • Street Smart

    Blaine Blackstone|Sep 23, 2021

I read Jim Elliott’s last column with great interest. He was using his platform to explain his thoughts on Republican versus Democrat methodology in securing votes. The first sentence in the second paragraph stopped me in my tracks and had to be re-read three times to make sure I had understood its meaning. That sentence states, “Republicans try to get results by using emotion and Democrats by using logic;” I thought that was a, shall we say “interesting,” statement considering what we have s...

  • Remember When

DIARY OF BESSIE FULLER REEDER Unedited excerpt from her diary regarding the trip from Hamilton, Montana to Whitepine By the spring of 1901 the folks decided they did not care to stay in Hamilton. Uncle Mark and family had gone on to Whitepine and had written to the folks and told them there was a lot of vacant land around Whitepine. My dad decided to go down there and look around. The land was covered with timber from which they could make a living. About the fourth of July we loaded up our things and started for Whitepine, cow, calf, an old...

A Thompson Falls City Council member has resigned her position. Ward 3 representative Ruth Cheney has stepped down from the council, effective immediately. • NABBED!

    Annie Wooden|Sep 23, 2021

An unsuspecting bee fly heading for pollen gets grabbed by what appears to be a jagged ambush bug or possibly a leaf-footed bug, according to Lauren Kerzicnik, a Montana State University extension specialist, with an M.S. and a Ph.D. in entomology. The bee was about to land at a flower when the predator insect nabbed it, pulled it in, then turned it upside down for the kill....

The board on Monday voted to hire McGee to act as an owner’s representative for the project, guiding the district through each phase. M...

  • Plains man shares vision for community

    Ed Moreth|Sep 23, 2021

Charles W. Bickenheuser hasn’t lived in Plains long, but that hasn’t stopped him from jumping right into issues he feels should be important to anyone who lives here. With only 2.5 years as a resident under his belt, he decided two weeks ago to address the town council at its September meeting and “shake things up a bit,” as he said. “This is a great place to live, but I think it can be better for everyone here,” said the 74-year-old Bickenheuser, a retired teacher and a former Special Forces veteran of the Vietnam War. Bickenheuse...

The race was held Saturday at the University of Montana golf course in Missoula and will be the same course used for the state meet next...

However, Thompson Falls ended up traveling to Charlo on Thursday and then playing host to the Eureka Lions on Saturday for the team's first District 7-B conference game. "We had a good week," said Hawk Coach Sandra Kazmie...
