  • Records fall at TF meet

    Annie Wooden|Sep 26, 2024

Records were meant to be broken, and Saturday at Thompson Falls' home cross country meet, nearly every record was broken. "That kid from Plains almost caught up to the four-wheeler." That was the reaction of other competitors on Saturday as Simeon Costner of Plains tied the course record of 11 minutes, 17 seconds, at the 24th annual Thompson Falls cross country event. Sophomore Marina Tulloch broke the course record for the girls by nearly a minute. In the junior high girls race, Quinn Delaney o...

  • Plains cleans up for fall

    Shannon Brown|Sep 26, 2024

Beautification traditions are spreading across the county. Plains has planned to do two a year. Last Saturday was a chilly morning as members of the board and volunteers came out to participate. This marked the fourth clean-up day in Plains. "We started in 2023 and do two clean-ups a year," Anita Marsh said. The six member committee consists of Emily Baker, Lana Dicken, Mary Heliwell, Scott Johnson, Tim Kinsinger, and Deb Warren. "We did a big cleaning in the Spring that took us until late...

  • Our Viewpoint: Speak your mind

    Annie Wooden|Sep 26, 2024

Sometimes I will go weeks without getting a letter to the editor. Other times, such as this week, there are several sitting in my inbox. There is something to be said for sitting down and putting thoughts together on paper (or in a word processor) and not just spouting off a few words on social media. It forces you to think about your words, compose complete sentences and try to get to a point. There are some weeks when I write my editorial at the last minute, scramble through paragraphs and then still wonder if I have made a point. Other...

  • Montana Viewpoint: Kids, cats and humility

    Jim Elliott|Sep 26, 2024

I am looking at a copy of a Sunday cartoon that appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch of January 14, 1900. It is called “Woman’s Craze for Animal Pets Versus Babies — what we might expect in the 20th Century”. There are a series of cartoons of stylishly dressed ladies of that bygone and hypothetically happy era walking and cuddling various pets in various years; in 1901, it is a monkey, 1902, a leopard, 1903, a hippopotamus with a blue ribbon tied around its tail, 1904, an alligator on a le...

  • Questions for school

    Sep 26, 2024

I submitted an open letter request for written responses to the Hot Springs Board of Trustees and Superintendent on September 10, 2024. My request addressed issues concerning the budget, school audits, spending controls and other items. I tried to get it added to the agenda for the September 12, 2024, board meeting but was told that it was within 48 hours of the meeting. I was told by Superintendent Chuinard and one board member to submit it for the correspondence section of the upcoming board meeting. The board meeting was held and lo and...

  • Claim was over the top

    Sep 26, 2024

Dear Editor, I received a political ad in the mail several weeks ago from the Montana Democratic Party announcing that Tim Sheehy has plans that "...would shutter 49 rural hospitals in Montana". That caught my attention because I think that would be exceedingly drastic. Plus I felt that claim was simply over the top. I did a little checking online and I ended up on the website causeiq.com. That website states there are 56 hospitals in Montana. Simple math of 56 minus 49 is seven. Does that mean that Sheehy will have Montanans with only seven...

  • Remember When?

    Sherry Hagerman-Benton|Sep 26, 2024

13 YEARS AGO • SEPTEMBER 6, 1939 NEEDED BADLY New Court House Advocated as Post-War Project Petitions are now being circulated throughout Sanders County requesting the Board of County Commissioners to call for an election to bond for a new court house. The election will be held at the same time as the general election in November. The proposal calls for a $95,000 ten-year bond issue. With very low interest rates prevailing now it appears to be an opportune time to plan for this much-needed p...

Several audience attendees were there for the public participation on the non-agenda items. Plains High School math teacher questioned the board about the school canceling field trips. • Noxon bridge concerns

    Sep 26, 2024

A lot of concerns have come into me and Lee Smith with the county garage concerning trucks. There’s been numerous heavy loads of logs, stone, equipment like excavators still using the bridge even with restrictions. Lee has reached out to the state and DOT and Lee said nobody seems to care. So I figured I would try to get it out to the public. Maybe DOT will come do their job and weigh trucks or stop them. Jim Byler, Noxon...

Principal Len Dorscher told the school board Monday that they started with 19 kindergarten students but now have 26 and a total of 240 students in the elementary. The junior high has 66 students and the high school 184, which is down about 24 from three years ago, said high school principal Jodi Morgan. Also...

  • Savage heat shutout

    Annie Wooden|Sep 26, 2024

The Hot Springs football team suffered two tough losses at the start of their season, but when they started winning, they really started winning. The Savage Heat are sitting 2-2 on the season after the second straight shutout win last Friday. Hot Springs beat West Yellowstone 50-0 on their home field Friday. "They ran a different offense than we expected, so the first quarter we adjusted and pretty much went back to our base defense," Coach Jim Lawson said of the West Yellowstone game. "We were...

The Lady Hawks came out and would gain the first five points, until Kalli Tuma got the serving lead for the Trotters to tie the game. Taylor Saner's serves helped keep the Trotters in the lead, but the Lady Hawks never faltered, kept a level...

  • Bulldogs corral Horsemen at Mission

    Ed Moreth|Sep 26, 2024

The Plains football team had a bitter loss to the Mission Bulldogs at St. Ignatius Saturday afternoon, when the Bulldogs defeated the Horsemen 60-24. Both teams had one win and one loss under their belts before Saturday's game. "I felt that we could compete with Mission and even come out with a win based on our progress this season so far. Mission is always a tough opponent," said Horseman head coach Mike Tatum. The game started well for Plains when quarterback Darren Standeford darted in from...
