  • Residents ask county for voting reports

    Annie Wooden|Sep 29, 2022

Sanders County Commissioners met last week with a group of residents asking for reports of county voting records from the 2020 General Election. Nancy Johnson asked the commissioners for cast vote records and a ballot review report, saying that she was "working with a group of concerned citizens to expose corruption and fraud." Johnson said the issue was not a Republic or a Democrat issue. "We believe there's fraud in every county in the U.S. This crime is being perpetrated against our great...

  • TF pickleball court resurfacing complete

    Miriah Kardelis|Sep 29, 2022

Thompson Falls Pickleball Club (TFPC) has come a long way in their endeavor to help restore the dilapidated courts that are located near the high school. Nearly a year ago, TFPC was approved as a 501c3 nonprofit organization in order to find support from those in the community who shared the same dream of seeing the courts restored. After working tirelessly to raise funds for repairs, Nancy Fields with TFPC said the Frisbee Morbella Foundation came through with a grant that helped cover the...

  • TIME OF THE SEASON

    Ed Moreth|Sep 29, 2022

A honey bee – Apis mellifera – collects pollen for its hive just west of Plains. "Pollen gathering is most important for feeding the larvae," said Lauren Kerzicnik, an extension specialist of entomology at Montana State University in Bozeman. Kerzicnik said that this time of year the bees are searching for fall-blooming plants as a food supply in order to prepare for the winter. "As sources are limited in spring and fall, they will be doing some important searching," added Kerzicnik, who als...

  • Poor Pumpkins

    Annie Wooden|Sep 29, 2022

At Harvest Foods recently, I saw something I’d never seen before – Pumpkin Spice Cheerios. I couldn’t believe it. Before I moved back to Montana, I remember the start of the pumpkin spice craze. What’s better than pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving? Try pumpkin pie in your coffee. It was special and delicious and you could only get it certain times of the year. It was a treat. Fast forward a decade or so later and pumpkin spice has lost its luster. It’s not as special when you can now buy Twinkies, Poo-Pourri toilet spray and even deodorant with the...

  • I pity the poor immigrant...

    Jim Elliott|Sep 29, 2022
    1

I’ve got to hand it to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for sharing the wealth of the immigrant crisis with Massachusetts, I’m just not sure what to hand him. A couple of weeks ago DeSantis had a couple of planeloads of asylum-seeking legal immigrants from Venezuela shipped from a San Antonio, Texas, immigrant shelter to exclusive Martha’s Vinyard island off the Massachusetts coast. Border states like Texas and Arizona shouldn’t have to be the only ones to bear the costs of humanitarian aid to immi...

  • A hunger for wild country

    Sep 29, 2022

There is a strong and growing hunger in Montana for protecting more of our wild places for future generations. A variety of polls show large majorities of Montanans value our wild public lands and want more of them permanently protected. This is a remarkable fact, especially now, when this desire is one of the few issues that almost all Montanans agree on. This makes it a puzzle to understand why we have such a poor record over several decades, to pass legislation to permanently protect some of our special places. It seems we have somehow...

  • Who is Mahlon Lee?

    Sep 29, 2022

Here is just one of his many stories. While on a service mission in Guiana, South America, he found people trying to grow corn with very little success. He taught them in order for the corn to pollinate; they had to plant in rows, close together; not in hills 6 feet apart. Then because of the monsoon season, they needed to plant the corn in raised rows. With Mahlon’s mentoring, they now had a 120-acre corn field about 6 foot tall and entering the tassel stage. But then they were faced with perhaps the toughest challenge. The Government of G...

  • Horsemen, Trotters, show school spirit

    Ed Moreth|Sep 29, 2022

The students came up with the overall theme of "We Bleed Orange and Black," though some classes added their own sub theme to their floats. Students from seventh grade to seniors took some three hours to put together their floats for the annual parade Friday morning in the school's parking lots. For the...
