THE FULL MOON sets over a treeline last week. See page 10 for the county's fall weekend forecast....
Relentless, intense, hard-hitting, blankety-blank good... The Thompson Falls Blue Hawks have been called a lot of things this fall but remember these important things they are called above all else – coach Jared Koskela and his boys are unbeaten and No. 3 ranked, leaving the Hawks in prime playoff position for the rapidly approaching Montana 8-Man football post-season. The barely bruised Blue Hawks won the 2020 Black and Blue game from Plains 51-6 on the friendly confines of Previs Field Friday...
HOT SPRINGS – Volleyball warfare, District 14C style. Complete with hard-hit, well-placed shots flying from both sides of the net, the Hot Springs Savage Heat faced off with the Charlo Lady Vikings in Hot Springs last Thursday in a heated battle for conference net supremacy. Finding a few more howitzers in their arsenal at crucial junctures in the match, the powerful Lady Vikings won this particular battle 25-20, 25-19, 29-27 and now assume control of the regular season conference race. After s...
Plains coach Eddie Fultz's idea of an ideal football situation is a roster comprised of an even mix of classes, with roughly equal numbers of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. What he has this season with the Horsemen is nothing like that. "We have six seniors but two of them never played football until this season," Fultz said, "and we have only one junior. It makes it kind of tough when you don't have that upperclassmen component to your roster, especially in football." A few...
Put the Hawk harriers in a race with a few hay bale obstacles, a staggered start, and running on fumes after a busy homecoming week, and guess what you will get? A whole lot of personal and seasonal bests. Last Saturday, Thompson Falls cross county coach Sarah Naegeli observed a fine performance from her team at the Mission Shadow Duals held at Pablo, Montana's Silver Fox Golf Course. "First off, the sweet PR (personal record) that Justin had, and the race that Josey ran for a season best; both...
The Noxon Red Devils took care of their playoff-clinching duties with a 67-38 win over Valley Christina in Victor Saturday, now they can turn their attention to improving that playoff position as much as possible. On the other end of the county, the Hot Springs Savage Heat will face an improbable situation that appears as if it will come to pass, hosting Noxon Thursday night in the Spa City and then loading up the bus and heading to White Sulphur Springs for a game with the dangerous Hornets,...
The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks are a very good volleyball team; evidently with or without the All-State Scarlette Schwindt in the lineup. With Schwindt staying back home as a precautionary measure, the Lady Hawks went to Troy and blasted past the homestanding Lady Trojans 25-15, 25-12, 25-7. “Scarlette is fine, she had a headache that day, so she stayed home,” coach Sandra Kazmierczak said. “But it was good to get some other girls into the rotation and everyone did great. We played a very strong match in Troy.” The other All-State netter...

The Sanders County Rural Landscape Initiative, operated by local resident Zachary Whipple-Kilmer, has voiced concerns regarding the state of private lands surrounding Sanders County that sold earlier this year. The land the Sanders County Rural Initiative is concerned about amounts to 630,000 acres. Previously owned by Weyerhaeuser, the acreage sold to a Georgia-based land investment company called Southern Pine Plantations. The company is now doing business as SPP Montana. Whipple-Kilmer, from...

After four weeks of the Fall 2020 Mack Days fishing event on Flathead Lake, Lonepine’s Mike Benson remains in first place with a total of 545 fish. The anglers had great weather last weekend, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes said, and the weekend total was 1,398 lake trout. Most anglers said the fishing were biting in the mornings, the afternoons were quiet and then it picked up in the late afternoons and evenings. Trollers are starting to catch some nice lake trout CSKT said in a press release, and anglers who are jigging are g...
