PLAINS – Talk about getting into the swing of things. The Hot Springs Lady Savage Heat came out swinging last week and ended up blasting out two important District 14C conference matches on the road , slamming the Plains Trotters 25-10, 25-21, 25-14 Tuesday (Oct. 15) and spiking the St. Regis Tigers 25-7, 25-8, 25-9 Saturday. Coach Alisha Pablo and her blooming Savage Heat complete regular season play this week, visiting Clark Fork for a match in Superior Tuesday (results were not available) a...

  • Lady Devils fall to Charlo Lady Vikes

    John Hamilton|Oct 24, 2019

Winding up regular season play with a pair of road matches this week, coach Teri Wilkinson and her Lady Red Devils played only one match last week, falling to Charlo 25-13, 25-10, 25-22 in Charlo last Tuesday (Oct. 15). • Hawks hold off Lady Vikes

    John Hamilton|Oct 24, 2019

Call it a nice kind of surprise. Facing off with Class C foe Charlo in Thompson Falls last Thursday, coach Sandra Kazmierczak and the Lady Hawks did not know anything about coach Rhondell Volinkaty and her upstart Lady Vikings, who have been the team to beat in District 14C so far this season. By the time the teams had played two sets – with the Hawks winning the first 25-21 and losing the second 25-8 – Kazmierczak realized what her Hawks were up against. “We were surprised, very impressed with this team,” coach K said. “They play very good...

  • Youth wrestling begins in Idaho

    Oct 24, 2019

The Blue Hawk Wrestling Club sent several grapplers into action at the Bonners Ferry Youth Tournament this past weekend. With a soccer tournament also going on, the number of wrestlers who went to Idaho was low, but coach Mike Thilmony expects to have more for another tournament this week in Post Falls. He says there are 23 kids out for fall youth wrestling. In Bonners Ferry, Hartleigh Block won third place at Bantam – 43 pounds; Micah Hartman did not place at Bantam-49; Kalib Butler won second place at Bantam-53; Caz Zeretzke was third at B...

  • Trotters battle through doldrums

    John Hamilton|Oct 24, 2019

The late-season doldrums, they can drag you down if you let them. Not that the Plains Trotters and head coach Jesse Butcher have not gone through this before. Why, just last year, they were in a similar situation, enduring a late-season volleyball slump just as the tournaments were about to begin. In 2018, after losing their final home match of the season to Arlee, the Trotters promptly went out and streaked to the District 14C tournament title in Hot Springs without the loss of a match. Sort of a late season rejuvenation that ended up...

  • Hawks fight for No. 2 seed

    John Hamilton|Oct 24, 2019

The Blue Hawks are in, but will they end up second or third? The Thompson Falls Blue Hawks blasted the Trojans 50-6 in Troy last Thursday and have clinched a berth in the rapidly approaching Montana State 8-Man playoffs, but where they fall in the final standings is of critical importance. And on the line this week as the regular season ends and the final pecking order is determined. Now 6-1 in Western Conference play and 7-1 overall, the same as the Mission Bulldogs whom the Hawks are tied with, the Falls boys wrap up the regular season...

  • Devils hope for home playoff game

    John Hamilton|Oct 24, 2019

The Red Devils are going to the State 6-Man playoffs. The only question remaining is will it be a home or a road game in the first round? Noxon clinched a spot in the upcoming Montana 6-Man playoffs by defeating Valley Christian 56-19 in Noxon Friday. Now 3-1 in Western Conference action and 5-2 overall, coach Bart Haflich and his Red Devils head to White Sulphur Springs Saturday for an important confrontation with the 3-1, 5-3 Hornets, with second place in the conference and the No. 2 seed from the West going to the winner. The surging Devils...

  • Plains perplexes Mountain Cats

    John Hamilton|Oct 24, 2019

Heading into Halloween week, Plains Horsemen coach Eddie Fultz is haunted by the Darby Tigers. If those darned Tigers had not defeated his Horsemen 41-26 way back in the third week of the season, Fultz and his Horsemen could be playing for a berth in the upcoming State 8-Man playoffs this week. As it is, the Horsemen, now 3-4 after a very respectable 46-12 loss to unbeaten, No. 2 ranked Clark Fork Friday in Superior, will complete season play hosting 1-7 Troy this Friday. “That Darby game is haunting us right now,” Fultz said. “If we would...

GROCERY BAGS: PLASTIC VS. PAPER Plastic bags are made out of polyethylene or polythene. Polythene is produced from crude oil and natural gas, two non-renewable resources found underground. Because plastic bags are so durable, this makes them a concern for the environment. They will not break down easily and as a result are very harmful to wildlife. Each year millions of discarded plastic shopping bags end up as plastic waste litter in the environment when improperly disposed of. The same properties that have made plastic bags so commercially...
