  • Montana voters to decide on ballot collection

Sanders County Ledger, Community News Service, UM School of Journalism|Oct 25, 2018

Supporters of LR-129 claim their proposal will ensure that mail-in ballots are secure and that the state's elections are free of potential fraud, but opponents argue the entire effort may cause unnecessary gridlock at the polls and distract from any actual security issue. The initiative would prohibit the collection of another individual's ballot, although family members and caregivers could deliver another person's ballot but would need to sign a registry at the polling place. People not...

    Ed Moreth|Oct 25, 2018

Close to 80 people attended the Clark Fork Valley Hospital's annual Women's Health Fair, which took place at Plains High School last Thursday. • A race to remember

    John Hamilton|Oct 25, 2018

Another season to remember. "For many of our runners, this was a first experience with a state competition," coach Sarah Naegeli said. "The hard work over the season, and the drive at this final race was a great end to our 2018 season. The 2019 season looks quite promising." The Hawks' top finisher in each race will be...

  • Lady Hawks ready for liftoff?

    John Hamilton|Oct 25, 2018

The Lady Hawks have been right on the precipice, right on the edge of becoming a very good volleyball team all season. Coach Sandra Kazmierczak is thinking that now is as good a time as any to finally make that leap of faith and for the Lady Hawks to be all that they can be. "These girls are very capable of being a very good team," she said. "We have all the necessary players – the setters, the hitters, the back row players – we just have to learn how to finish points and games better." Getting...

  • Horsemen's season story comes to end with win in Troy

    John Hamilton|Oct 25, 2018

The story of the Plains Horsemen's 2018 football season could have been quite a bit different with a few different circumstances along the way. As it is, coach Eddie Fultz and his Horsemen completed the campaign on a high note with a 70-30 road win over Troy last Thursday night. Plains finishes the season with a 2-7 record. Fultz couldn't help but to reflect on what could have been. "Looking back on it, we didn't catch any breaks this season," he said. "We lost a few games we felt we should...

    Justin Harris|Oct 25, 2018

Trevor Harris has been a fan of baseball since he can remember and his time with various leagues in the Thompson Falls area did not let him down in his quest to be the best player possible. Now a junior in high school, Harris has earned himself an opportunity to get some training and professional coaching that will lead him further down the path to his goal: a college scholarship playing the game known as “America’s pastime.” Sports apparel brand, Under Armor, has a baseball factory team and held tryouts this month in Spokane where Harri...

  • Carol Brooker is dedicated to county

    Oct 25, 2018

“We must show, not merely in great crises, but in the everyday affairs of life, the qualities of practical intelligence, of courage, of hardihood, and endurance, and above all the power of devotion to a lofty ideal, which made great the men who founded this Republic in the days of Washington, which made great the men who preserved this Republic in the days of Abraham Lincoln.” — Theodore Roosevelt You will not find any person more dedicated to the betterment of this county than Carol Brooker. As her employee of seven years, I have seen her ...

  • Brooker has non-partisan in service

    Oct 25, 2018

In 2010, Sanders County voters decided to make several of the county elected positions non partisan. There was wisdom in this as these positions are intended to serve the entire county and not just party politics. We have a candidate for commissioner actively promoting himself as a Republican because “these are MY values” and encouraging others to vote Republican. NOT who that candidate is or what they stand for or what their verifiable track record is. Just vote Republican no matter what. Do we really need another local elected official tha...

  • Vote Yes on I-185

    Oct 25, 2018

Please Vote YES on I-185 It will no doubt cause many smokers to quit smoking; protecting their life and health. Two of the members of my family died of cancer; both smoked. Look how much the tobacco companies are spending to defeat it. Let the users pay their medical bills in the price of the tobacco product. Thank you. Dick Christopher, Polson...

  • Brooker is the clear choice

    Oct 25, 2018

Editor, We are lucky, in Sanders County, to have commissioners who are willing to listen to all of their constituents, genuinely care for the residents of their communities, and work for the best interest of their citizens. In this election year, we have the opportunity to re-elect Carol Brooker, a commissioner whose experience, compassion and knowledge, make her the best choice for Sanders County. Rather than pie-in-the-sky promises of controlling smoke in our area, Carol has reasonable, attainable and sensible goals. Her values of hard work,...

  • Legislators can do better than I-185

    Oct 25, 2018

While I share Jim Elliott’s feelings about the “big tobacco” anti-185 advertising, I don’t want to vote based on a knee-jerk reaction. And, as much as I dislike that “big tobacco” funds the anti-ads, I’m equally unhappy to see corporate medicine, which has a financial stake in expanded Medicaid, pouring money into the pro-ads. It seems there are more than enough lobbyists to go around. Drawing a line between tobacco and health care costs is a ruse. If I-185 raised the tax on tobacco, included electronic devices in the tax, and applied that...

    Justin Harris|Oct 25, 2018

In honor of Veterans Day, the history class of Noxon High School will again be putting on a special assembly to recognize those in the area who have served. Since Veterans Day falls on a Sunday this year, the school will hold the event Monday, Nov. 12, beginning 11:45 a.m. and ending around 12:25 p.m. The class has sent out many personal invites to area veterans to join them at the school for the event. Although the assembly honors veteran, it is also an educational opportunity for students to physically see those who selflessly served the...
