The Thompson Falls Woman's Club (TFWC) celebrated a landmark occasion last Thursday at the Old Jail Museum in Thompson Falls. 2021 marks the 100-year anniversary since the chapter became a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC). The women's community organization has spent the last 100 years serving Thompson Falls and Sanders County by supporting school programs, youth sports, the public library and many other organizations. The group has also provided several scholarships...

The girls harvested 319 Baby Boo and Jack Be Nimble pumpkins and donated 100 to the Plains Woman's Club's pumpkin decoration event, which will be held at the VFW in Plains on Halloween from 4-6 p.m. It took the two girls, along with Ashley Alder of Moiese and Marie Evans of Paradise, about two hours Saturday to...

The start of the general deer and elk hunting season produced the highest number of harvested white-tailed deer at game check stations in northwest Montana since 2017. Overall, hunters in northwest Montana (Region 1) reported harvesting 209 white-tailed deer, including 102 bucks, as well as 12 mule deer and 21 elk at four check stations. The overall number of hunters reported at check stations was down, possibly due to hunters being confused about whether stopping was required. Last year,...
We've entered a new era as Montanans. It's life-changing. We now have to dial the area code to reach out and touch someone. Granted, many households are getting rid of land lines and your cellphone is smart enough to just dial for you when you click on a name. However, it's going to be an adjustment for those of us who still use the old-fashioned touchtone phones. Remember when it was a big deal when we had to start dialing the three-digit prefix for towns? It took awhile to get used to not just dialing 3421 for The Ledger and having to add in...
A remarkable presentation was given to the Sanders County Board of Health at their October 13 meeting by residents Kate Hardman, Sarah Klingenberg and Mary Reed. Detailed informational packets, citing 50 references of articles and videos, were provided to each Health Board member and other audience participants. All attendees displayed mutual courtesy and respect, and frankly, the audience seemed spellbound. Highlights included safety and efficacy considerations. Many adverse reactions to the vaccines have been reported. There are documented re...
Dear Editor: An article in the Ledger on October 13 notified Sanders County citizens that yet another second-time DUI offender (Bruce Linguanti) was released from jail with only a 12-month suspended sentence. He was given credit for 6 days served while awaiting his sentencing. Bet he did a lot of self-reflection during that time! Can anyone forget the tragic and senseless deaths in 2012 of two innocent young adults and the grave injuries to their children ages 2 and 4? This accident was caused by a non-reformed drunk who also had previous DUls...
Recently my home county of Sanders twice made national news, first for having the highest increase in COVID cases in the United States and more recently for a group of citizens pressuring a member of the Sanders County Board of Health into resigning because he stood up for what he was trained in and with which the crowd disagreed, namely medical science. This is the kind of publicity that most communities would not want to have because it would serve as a deterrent to the economic growth of an area. Well, that would have been the case years...
3 YEARS AGO • OCTOBER 8, 1981 HUNTERS SCORE WELL OPENING DAY Weather was considered to be the key factor and Mother Nature cooperated as hoped, to make the opening day of the 1991 big game hunting season one of the more successful on record. Although counts were overall not as high as recent opening days, the number of elk reported was nearly double that of last year and rumors were plentiful about downed animals and animals in hunting camps, which sprang up virtually wherever a tent could be pitched, or a camper parked. With two consecutive n...

An October 21, 2021 Ledger article stated that, regarding COVID-19 treatments, “the example was an increased risk, especially in youth, for myocarditis, which is an inflammation of the heart. Valentine made clear that the risk for getting myocarditis is raised by a higher percentage in those who take birth control as compared to the risk increase for those who get vaccinated.” Dr. Jessica Valentine provided this statement clarifying the example: “The risk for myocarditis is higher in people who have COVID than it is in those who have the COVID...
Editor, Sanders County is losing a dedicated public servant with the resignation of Carol Brooker. We are a much poorer community and county without Carol’s knowledge, commitment and hard work, as our County Commissioner. It is disappointing, yet understandable, that her resignation has come after 27 years of good work on our behalf. The uncivil, baseless and toxic bellowing in much of our current public discourse has caused many citizens to reconsider their involvement in participatory democracy. Carol will be greatly missed and our hope is t...
This time of year draws many out into the wilderness for hunting, fishing, hiking and more, especially in Sanders County. It is easy to lose track of time and one’s whereabouts due to the surrounding natural beauty, loss of light late in the year and enrapturement in what one is doing. This is the time when accidents happen, and people find themselves lost in the wilderness. The National Park Service estimates that over 2,000 people get lost per year in North America, and many Search and Rescue (SAR) professionals say that number is far g...

He met his person Jacki that morning, which is where he received his nickname "Hand me that lil bundle of Squish." And he was, weighing in at just shy of 10 pounds; he was our "lil bundle of Squish." Squish was a force to be reckoned with chasing after "his boys," whom he lovingly nicknamed Bubbie and Kye-Buddy. He also always...

This Plains High School teacher isn't taking a nap on the school lawn, he's teaching his physics students how to use a clinometer, an instrument to measure heights of tall objects such as buildings. For Carl Benson's class, the students worked as a group to determine the height of the gymnasium, which is 15 meters - just over 49 feet. In November, the students' egg projects will be dropped from the gym roof. They received materials for the protective egg casings last week and will start...
