The Thompson Falls Dam is getting an upgrade this fall. NorthWestern Energy recently began a $5.6 million project to install two new radial spillway gates at the dam. The project got underway last month, and will continue through the winter. Engineer BJ Cope visited the project last week, explaining that while the work to put in a temporary road began several weeks ago, the actual construction phase of the project just started recently. The project includes replacing four of the existing...
More than 48,000 acres burned throughout Sanders County as part of the Highway 200 Complex. Hundreds of firefighting personnel were in the area battling the blazes, the largest being the Deep Creek fire west of Thompson Falls, and the Sheep Gap fire west of Plains. Now comes the task of cleaning up the burned area and salvaging what timber can be saved. Next week, the Forest Service will lead a field trip of the Sheep Gap Fire. The trip will begin at the Plains/Thompson Falls District at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7. The agency will provide...
Plains School and Town of Plains leaders got together to officially transfer a small parcel of land with an old schoolhouse on top of it at the corner of Railroad Street and Clayton Street. Plains School Superintendent Thom Chisholm signed over about a quarter of an acre to Plains Mayor Greg Eitelberg last week at the courthouse in Thompson Falls. It's the only piece of land the town owns along Railroad Street, although the log schoolhouse on it is owned by the Plains Woman's Club. It was that...
The country is distracted. Since the day Donald Trump announced his candidacy, politics in the U.S. has been a whirlwind of distractions. Trump is almost 10 months into his presidency, and we’re more confused than ever. Accusations are flying on both sides of the political aisle, and it’s hard to see how anything can get done. Former FBI Director Robert Mueller is leading an investigation into whether or not Russia played a role in the 2016 presidential election. And this week a grand jury indicted Trump campaign officials as part of the inv...
Editor, We are writing in support of Mark Sheets for Mayor of Thompson Falls. There is no one in this town that we feel is better suited for the position. He and Karen have been our friends for 35 years/neighbors for 32 years. Torgy and Mark taught together at TFHS for 19 years. We raised our children together - he taught our children. He has our respect and our vote. Mark was born and raised in Seeley Lake (his family worked over 60 years at Pyramid Mtn. Lumber). He earned a BS from MSU Northern. After short stints in Box Elder, Rosebud and...
Editor, I was sad and angry to read the Other Viewpoints article in the Oct. 26 issue of the Ledger. I wasn’t disturbed by the authors’ outrage at the so called disrespect of the U.S. flag by athletes kneeling during the national anthem. Many people feel very emotional about our flag. They may have served in the military or even lost friends and family in military service. And true enough, according the American Legion’s Flag Code; when the Star Spangled Banner is played, whether the U.S. flag is flying or not, civilians should stand at atten...
In a world where financial markets are booming and corporate executive salaries rival the incomes of small nations, the corporate tax collections of the United States Government have been falling for years. This is because, some say, that the corporate tax rate is so high in the United States that companies have moved their headquarters, and thereby their taxes, to sunnier tax climates. They can just not afford to pay a 35% tax on profits, they say. And I am here to tell you that any U. S....
7 YEARS AGO • NOVEMBER 3, 1947 HALLOWEEN It was a nice Halloween after all this year. Tough kids did shoot out all the street lights, put up road blocks, and tear down fences, but other than that Halloween transpired without any serious difficulty. The little kids in masquerade “trick or treat” were cute and nice, but we will reserve our comments concerning their older brothers and sisters who should know better. EDA GRANT TO FINANCE ADDITION TO COURTHOUSE Sanders County’s application for an EDA (Economic Development Administration) grant o...

I got really stressed out because I had only a week to get it straightened out. This is really a bad problem.” JUDY HAINES, Thompson Falls – “We are on Blue Cross Blue Shield and it is a separate plan. If you are...

It was a puking pumpkin that swayed the judges to pick it for first place in the Jack o'lantern contest of the Plains After School Program last week. Alexis Coe, 11, was one of two girls that designed Jack o'lanterns with the vomit spewing scheme and one of 10 contestants in the fifth grade category – Maddy Blood, 10, also had a pumpkin with puke coming out its mouth. However, Coe added one more element. Her Jack o'lantern had tears coming from its eye. "I like that one because it was crying. I...
Have you ever wanted to go to Hollywood and be in a feature film with known actors and actresses? Well you could have done so in Sanders County last week. That opportunity happened in Heron for some of the residents. A movie company filmed a segment of a movie called Radio Flash at the home of “Crazy Eddie” Bernier where he recycles old cars and other material. Originally, it was thought that Eddie would be in the movie because he is such a “local character,” but it didn’t work out that way. The premise of the film was that there was a cyber a...
