    John Hamilton|Nov 2, 2017

CHARLO – When the chips were down the Plains Trotters played their best volleyball and emerged from the District 14C tournament in Charlo last week with a solid second place finish. Arlee wound up winning the two-day tourney and grabbing 14C's top seed into this week's Western C Divisional tournament, Plains battled back to win second after fighting through four tough matches Friday, Charlo finished third and Noxon fourth. Since only the top two teams advance, the Arlee Scarlets and the T...

  • Could this be deja vu?

    John Hamilton|Nov 2, 2017

Déjà vu all over again? It's tournament time for the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks and it has a familiar feel to it for those who remember last year. The Lady Hawks went into the Western B tourney last fall as the No. 4 seed from District 7B and ended up winning second place in the tournament. Coach Sandra Kazmierczak and her Lady Hawks then went on to Bozeman and ended up winning the State B third place trophy, which represents the best finish ever by a Sanders County team at a State volleyball t...

  • Titans end Horsemen's ride

    John Hamilton|Nov 2, 2017

It was one heck of a ride while it lasted but the Plains Horsemen’s football season came to an end Saturday with a hard-fought 34-20 loss to the Tri-Cities Titans in Judith Gap. In Plains’ first football playoff game since 2009, coach Eddie Fultz’s Horsemen fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter before eventually coming back to tie things up at 20-20 by halftime. The Titans scored two touchdowns in the second half to make off with the win. The Horsemen complete their fine season with a 6-4 record, with all four of those losses coming to playo...

  • View from the sidelines

    John Hamilton|Nov 2, 2017

I really did not want to write this column this week about this man. Kenny Marjerrison is someone I got to know through the job of writing local sports and, like every other person that knew anything about him, his loss is a hard one for me to understand right now, let alone put into words. I guess you could describe my fear of doing this – paying my final tribute to a man I grew to like and respect so much – as a form of stage fright. Kind of like freezing up and forgetting your lines on sta...

  • Red Devil redemption

    John Hamilton|Nov 2, 2017

The Noxon Red Devils may have lost their football playoff game with Grass Range-Winnett but, make no mistake about it, coach Bart Haflich and his Red Devils have now arrived as a football team. Coming back from a brutal 0-4 start to the season that involved hellacious road trips to faraway locales like West Yellowstone and White Sulphur Springs, the Devils regrouped at mid-season and made a mad rush to qualify for the 6-Man playoffs. The Devils won their final four games of the season on the field and added in a forfeit victory to finish the re...

Finishing the season with a win over Troy, the Thompson Falls Lady Hawk JV volleyball team completed season play at TFHS Friday. Coach Chelsea Craw’s Lady Hawks spiked the Lady Trojan JV 26-24, 25-19, 15-9 as Megan Baxter clubbed five kills, Hope Slater rifled in seven aces and Kelsey Frank directed the Hawk net attack with five set assists. Craw and her young net crew finish season play with a 3-12 win-loss record....

  • Plains VFW cancels NFL package

    Ed Moreth|Nov 2, 2017

The VFW in Plains put principle above money when they voted to cancel their subscription to the National Football League (NFL) sports package, even though they’ve already paid for it. “No one should kneel when the anthem is played. Too many people died for that flag,” reads the notice put up on the front door of VFW Post 3596, adding that effective Oct. 18, the club will no longer be televising NFL games. The notice continues, “People are free to protest but not then. We are free to not watch, or pay to watch them play if they do that. The NFL...

Noxon National Honor Society is putting on a countywide coat drive beginning Nov. 6 and continuing through Nov. 17. There will be drop boxes in Thompson Falls at Harvest Foods, in Trout Creek at the Local Store, and in Noxon at both the school and the Big Sky Pantry. This is the first time National Honor Society has put on this coat drive, but in the past former teacher Kathy Fitchett, who passed away earlier this year, presented the coat drive...
