  • Oh, the miles you'll go

    John Hamilton|Nov 7, 2019

Football playoff fever is gripping Sanders County and the only cure for this affliction is to keep on playing, and winning, as long as possible. Hopefully right up into championship weekend near the end of November. Two Sanders County teams remain in the hunt for State championships in the Montana 8-Man and 6-Man football ranks. The Thompson Falls and Hot Springs football teams advanced into the second round of their respective playoffs last week with big home wins, as the Blue Hawks sent the...

The E.L. Johnson Memorial Pool in Plains is over halfway to being repaired and will open on time for next season, according to Mayor Dan Rowan. The crew of Trueline completed fabrication of the pool and it's ready for the next phase - installing some 520 feet of pipes around the pool, which will be done by Silver Tip Plumbing and Heating, owned by Scott Rice of Plains. Rice said he offered to provide the materials at cost and free labor. "I just want to do anything I can to help the community,"...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Nov 7, 2019

Late last month, the NCAA voted to allow college athletes to be compensated. The move was influenced by the state of California's earlier decision to allow college athletes to sign endorsement deals and hire agents. We can see both sides of the issue. College sports are lucrative for schools and for the NCAA, which reports more than $1 billion in annual revenue. It's only fair that the players get a piece of the pie as well, since they are the ones putting in the effort to win national championships and draw attention to their respective...

Last week was Red Ribbon Week at our schools. For those that don’t know about it; Red Ribbon Week is a national drug awareness program aimed at educating students about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. The program began in Southern California after the 1985 torture and murder of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena at the hands of a Mexican drug cartel. The program has been taught in our nation’s schools since 1987. I was at the high school last Thursday to help with the Elks Lodge’s...

4 YEARS AGO • NOVEMBER 1, 1979 CINDERELLA HAWKS HEAD FOR ROUDUP The Cinderella football team of western Montana may still be looking at the clock, but it still hasn't struck midnight, their Bluebird coach hasn't turned into a pumpkin and the role of the big bad witch is handed to the Roundup Panthers this week as the Blue Hawks continue their waltz to the state class B championship. It was defense again Friday night that dominated play for Coach Doug Walsh's Blue Hawks in their first round p...

LONNY DAVIS, Thompson Falls - “I’d pay off all my bills and I would help family and friends pay off theirs. I’d give 10% to the church, that would be the first thing I’d do.” ANNETTE HARRIS, Noxon - “Probably travel more, give some to my children and grandchildren. • Tips for stress-free travel during the holidays

    Miriah Kardelis|Nov 7, 2019

Thanksgiving is approaching faster than we may realize. The holiday is known to be the busiest travel day of the year; and according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), around 90 percent of Americans travel more than 50 miles from home to celebrate. Last year's AAA Thanksgiving traveling forecast, projected around 54.3 million people commuted either through road trips, flying, traveling on trains or waterways to get to their loved ones. While the projected travel numbers have not been...

  • Spooky fun for Plains Halloween

    Ed Moreth|Nov 7, 2019

Deer that normally leisurely stroll through Plains could be seen scrambling around the streets last Thursday. It wasn't predators moving the animals around town, but an assortment of little spooks, spacemen, princesses, football players, and super heroes. However, the deer had some reprieve, thanks to organized events that kept the kids in one place, temporarily. Despite that there was a witch at Sunset Hills Funeral Home, an estimated 400 adults and kids visited the funeral parlor for donuts,...

  • Montana celebrates 130th birthday

    Miriah Kardelis|Nov 7, 2019

On November 8, 1889, Montana entered the Union and became the 41st state of the United States of America. This year marks her 130th birthday. Many may call her “the big sky country,” but everyone can agree that Montana is truly “the last best place.” Native Americans were the first to inhabit the land, and today there are seven federally recognized Indian tribes in Montana. The state’s population grew exponentially when gold was discovered in 1852, closely followed by the discovery of coal, copper, lead and silver in 1862. These discoveri...

  • Warriors await Hawks

    John Hamilton|Nov 7, 2019

THOMPSON FALLS – From here to eternity. Okay, maybe not clear to eternity, but from here to far, far away Fairview, one of the towns closest to North Dakota in Montana, some 725 miles away from here on the route the Hawks plan on taking there, according to coach Jared Kosklea. To earn their trip to face the No. 1 ranked Fairview Warriors, the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks raced past the Twin Bridges Falcons 55-20 on the friendly though slightly frozen turf of Previs Field Friday in the first r...

  • Roy-Winifred Outlaws outlast Red Devils

    John Hamilton|Nov 7, 2019

NOXON – No one's patsy on the football field any longer, the Noxon Red Devils have earned respect for the program and the school over the last several years as evidenced by the Devils' third straight State 6-Man playoff appearance. Coach Bart Haflich and his Red Devils completed a fine 2019 football season on semi-sunny Jenny Lampshire Field Saturday, losing the hard-fought game 38-29 to the Outlaws. Hampered by injuries to key performers, the Red Devils did not have all their players a...

  • View from the Sidelines

    John Hamilton|Nov 7, 2019

This is not about travelling over 700 miles one way to lose. This is about winning the next big game and proving the skeptics wrong. As the team bus to Fairview rolls off later this week, coach Jared Koskela and his hungry Blue Hawks are not looking at this trip being over any time soon; they will gladly keep on riding if it means getting a shot at Thompson Falls’ first State championship since way back in 1975, when the Hawks won the second of two straight Class B titles in the 11-Man game. One year after moving into the 8-Man ranks after s...

NOXON – Everyone wins in wars like this – the players, the fans, the sport itself. Volleyball teams from District 14C waged post-season war in the conference tournament in Noxon Thursday and Friday, and the net battles ended up going into extra matches as Charlo and Hot Springs faced off three separate times Friday before finally settling the issue. After falling to the upstart Hot Springs Savage Heat, who entered the tourney as the No. 2 seed, in the undefeated match Friday morning, the top...

  • Heat derail Engineers, host Westby-Grenora Saturday

    John Hamilton|Nov 7, 2019

Been there, done that. Hoping to go there and do that again. Seasoned veterans of the Montana 6-Man playoffs, Hot Springs coaches Jim Lawson, the head man, and assistant Andrew Leicthnam have guided the Savage Heat to the quarterfinals once more. The powerful Hot Springs Savage Heat, the No. 2 ranked 6-Man in Montana in the latest 406mtsports.com power poll and hoping to add to the legend of Hot Springs football, will host Westby-Grenora Saturday.
