by Ed Moreth It was a cold and snowy morning, but that didn't stop the members of VFW Post 3596 from paying tribute to military veterans, past and present, in a ceremony at Plains Cemetery on Thursday, Veterans Day. "We gather here today at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 2021 to place this wreath in remembrance of those who have served this great nation before us, to honor those who now serve this great nation, and to salute those who stand by them in times of peace...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Nov 18, 2021

It seems as though a lot of conversations lately have come back to a common theme: you never know what someone is going through. There continues to be a lot of tension and division in our world, not just on a national scale but even in our small towns. People are still on edge. People are still in heated discussions about public health, politics and myriad other topics. This week, my friend Chelle made the analogy that we're all like ducks. We're all just swimming through life, and underneath we're all fervently paddling just as hard under...

My one brief experience with presidential politics occurred in 1995. My candidate was Colin Powell. The great historian, Stephen Ambrose, had emerged as a leader in the movement to win the1996 Republican presidential nomination for Powell, and I was able to make contact with him in Helena where he shared a part-time home with his daughter and son-in-law. Ambrose, probably best known in Montana for his authorship of his biographical work on the tragic life of explorer Meriwether Lewis, was also the biographer of Eisenhower: Soldier and...

  • Providing accurate information

    Nov 18, 2021

Thank you to the Board of Health for the clarifying article in the November 4 issue of The Ledger. We are blessed with many sources of information on important subjects. But we’d be more blessed if the many sources had the sole goal of providing timely and accurate information. Since that isn’t the case, having thorough, timely information provided by a source as knowledgeable as the Board of Health, on a subject as important as COVID vaccines, is a blessing. Thank you. Ruth Cheney, Thompson Falls...

I have always shared the bounty of the ranch with sportsmen and conservationists for free. No one has ever paid a dime for access.
