    Ed Moreth|Nov 24, 2022

Nearly 80 people gathered at the Sanders County Fairgrounds pavilion last Tuesday evening to hear an appeal from two local men to convince residents to put pressure on the state or federal government to purchase nearly 12,000 acres of wilderness for the general public to use. MKH Montana, a 401k trust for a highway patrol in another state, is selling 11,804 acres of wilderness in Sanders County and 7,711 acres in Mineral County. MKH has already sold some acreage, which is now closed to the publi...

  • Plains council discusses housing

    Ed moreth|Nov 24, 2022

Plains held a special town council meeting last Tuesday to go over two issues that are somewhat connected, but were not as easily passed. The resolution, the "Town's Position on Executive Committee on Housing Recommendations," unanimously passed within 30 minutes. The resolution "Formation of a Community Council" took longer and did pass. In response to Governor Greg Gianforte's Housing Task Force, which could take away a municipality's authority and freedom to regulate housing regulations,...

  • Thanksgiving Tradition

    Ed Moreth|Nov 24, 2022

A group of students at Plains Elementary School turned their lesson tables into lunch tables on Friday for an early Thanksgiving celebration. Denise Montgomery has been holding a Thanksgiving celebration for her class for 32 years, but she said it still brings her pleasure. This year, her 13 first-graders joined with the dozen first-grade students of Kylie Ishler's class for the celebration, which included turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy, apple cider and cornbread that they made themselves....

Nearly 300 Sanders County residents got help from community members and churches last weekend as the annual Thanksgiving Baskets program packed and delivered the ingredients for turkey dinners to 76 families from Heron to Thompson Falls. On Saturday, volunteers gathered at Community Congregational Church in Thompson Falls to sort through tons of canned and fresh produce, pie crusts, pumpkin and other items. On Sunday, church and community members packed the boxes and delivered them to families....

  • A shift in focus

    Annie Wooden|Nov 24, 2022

There's a subtle shift happening this week. The energy and adrenaline of summer and fall that built up to the election is giving way to the season of giving and thankfulness. Lately in the stores and at the post office, people have kept their heads down, focused on their tasks, and there hasn't seemed to be as much mingling. Everyone is rushing to the next event or to shuffle kids to activities or to get back to work. As the holidays approach, though, our daily lives get busy with shopping, school concerts, Christmas on Main Street and bazaars...

  • Election misinformation

    Nov 24, 2022

Regarding the letter from Gunner Junge (Sanders County Ledger, Nov. 17, 2022), there are many points that I could take issue with, but I will focus on only a few. Yes, the United States is a democracy and, yes, the United States is a republic. The representatives of this republic are selected through a democratic process. That is the modern definition of a democracy. Regarding the comparison of election results timing in Florida and Arizona, Mr. Junge appears to be confusing 1) "calling" election winners, and 2) counting all the votes in an...

  • Montana Viewpoint

    Jim Elliott|Nov 24, 2022

This is the story — correct that — legend, of a man named Les Webber who ranched and caroused in and around the town of Plains, Montana. When you are leaving Plains, headed to Missoula, you might notice on the right a weathered billboard with a narrow protective roof over it in front of a large Town Pump store. The fact that it is still there at all is, I was told, thanks to the intervention of a longtime sheriff’s deputy who convinced the contractor building the new Town Pump to leave it becau...

  • Question of the week: How do you cook a turkey?

    Jennifer Curran|Nov 24, 2022

Spencer Hart - “10 minutes in the oven because it’s so big.” Maddie Park - “Put it in a pan and you cut it up and cook for 30 minutes or so and serve it.” Zackary Keen - “Cut its head off and put in stuffing and some ingredients. His final act was with the Plains Police Commission hearing. He had also been the attorney...
