  • Blue Hawks win state title

    Annie Wooden|Nov 25, 2021

It was a chilly day at Previs Field last Saturday, but the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks were on fire as they dominated their way through a Montana 8-Player State Championship. Coach Jared Koskela and his Hawks defeated defending state champions Flint Creek 40-8, finishing the season 13-0 and winning the first state title for the school since 1975. "I'm speechless, it's incredible," Hawk senior Nathan Schraeder said Saturday. He added that the Hawks felt pretty confident "when we got up three...

  • Community celebrates victory

    Annie Wooden|Nov 25, 2021

The state championship win wasn't just a victory for the Hawks. The entire Thompson Falls community celebrated the team's win with fireworks and a parade down Main Street on Saturday. Koskela said the parade, fireworks and celebration after the game were unexpected, and something he's never experienced as a player or a coach. "You couldn't hardly leave the field," he said. Members of the last state championship teams from Thompson Falls, in 1974 and 1975, joined the Hawks on the field after the...

  • Plains youth gets hunt of a lifetime

    John Dowd|Nov 25, 2021

A Plains girl and her father were given the hunting opportunity of a lifetime, getting to stay at the Boone and Crockett Club's Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch near Dupuyer, Montana, and hunt for her first deer on one of the surrounding ranches. Karissa French was one of five first-time hunters selected for this year's First Hunt on the Front event through the First Hunt Foundation. This was the third year the organization has held the hunt, and it brought in families from across Montana to...

  • Commissioners choose coroner

    Ed Moreth|Nov 25, 2021

Pat Barber of Trout Creek was appointed as the Sanders County Coroner by Commissioner Glen Magera at the courthouse on Wednesday. This is an interim position that goes until the November 2022 election cycle, but Barber said he will be throwing his name into the hat at that time. "I am looking forward to serving Sanders County with compassion, understanding and professionalism," said the 57-year-old Barber, a retired Coast Guardsman who spent most of his career on rescue helicopters. The county c...

  • Community helps others with Thanksgiving baskets

    John Dowd|Nov 25, 2021

Every year several churches and community members work together to help ensure every family has a meal for Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving Baskets program started over 17 years ago at Thompson Falls Community Congregational Church and has spread to incorporate numerous businesses and churches working together. The church now acts as the home base of the event. David Reedy, one of the event's original organizers, has described it as "quite an operation." Gary and Jan Thompson have lived in the...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Nov 25, 2021

Last week there was great energy throughout the Thompson Falls community as the Blue Hawks prepared for their state championship game. Parents and students volunteered to paint windows on Main Street. Businesses decorated with banners, signs and balloons. There was a community pep rally, a parade before and after the game, a team dinner with the 1974-75 alumni and a celebration in Thompson Falls after the game that felt like an all-school reunion. It made me smile to see how the alumni from the previous championship team were so happy for the n...

  • Montana Viewpoint

    Jim Elliott|Nov 25, 2021

Does the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse, who was accused of murdering two men and wounding another at a protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, broaden the way for Americans to take the law into their own hands? Can individual Americans, by claiming that they felt their life was in danger, become judge, jury, and executioner and not worry unduly about the consequences? If the law is a matter of personal interpretation, who can you trust? Imperfect as it is, the American legal system at least spells out...

  • Give thanks for wild women

    Sanders County Ledger|Nov 25, 2021

I met Phoebe at a crosscut saw training with the Cabinet Ranger Forest District in Montana on my first week of work for Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness. I was timid because I hadn’t used the tool before, and she helped me feel comfortable. I liked Phoebe immediately. She has this powerful and assertive way about her that demands respect while simultaneously communicating that it doesn’t matter if you respect her because she is going to go her own way regardless. She’s a wild woman. I’d like to try to characterize Phoebe for you although I...

  • Sanders County Feed opens in Thompson Falls

    Miriah Kardelis|Nov 25, 2021

A new farm and feed store has opened in Thompson Falls, promising quality products and hospitality right at home. Owners Wayne and JP Ducote opened Sanders County Feed, in the former Montana Fancy Indoor Outfitters building, with the notion of keeping the wants and needs of the local residents as their number one priority. After listening and learning from local ranchers, contractors and veterinarians, as well as bringing in a skillset from their own ranching experience, the owners felt that...

  • Hot Springs library transitions in pandemic

    Miriah Kardelis|Nov 25, 2021

The Preston Hot Springs Public Library is on the road to recovery after dealing with the damaging effects COVID-19 caused to the accessibility that public libraries offer to the community. While the library was closed to the public in 2020, once services resumed, it was apparent the need for community assistance was stronger than ever. "COVID changed the way we look at libraries, especially after finding out libraries weren't considered essential by the state" said Library Director Starla Rice....

  • Lions Club brings holiday spirit to Plains

    Ed Moreth|Nov 25, 2021

The Plains Lions Club put up their Christmas decorations along Main Street a week early, not to spread holiday cheer earlier, but to make sure everything was working. After putting them up the lights in 2020, the club found several that weren't working and couldn't get them all fixed until they were well into the season. Nevertheless, Steve Spurr, club president of the Plains Lions Club and member of six years, hopes to make the town more festive and putting out the decorations puts him in an...

  • Students get creative in the name of science

    Ed Moreth|Nov 25, 2021

When Sir Isaac Newton formulated his law of gravity over 350 years ago after seeing an apple fall from a tree, he probably didn't envision raw eggs being tossed from a roof to validate his findings. Nevertheless, for the last three decades at Plains High School, raw eggs have been sent to their doom in the name of science. The students of Carl Benson's physics class are learning Newton's Principia Mathematical Philosophiae Naturalis not with apples, but with their annual Egg Drop Project. One...
