  • VonHeeder, Weeks are All-State C; other H-Men honored

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

Jay VonHeeder has been named as the co-Western C defensive player of the year and, along with fellow senior Kyle Weeks, was also named All-State C by vote of division coaches recently. VonHeeder was honored as first team all-conference at tight end on offense and first team at defensive end to lead Plains selections on the team. Weeks, who also played effectively at quarterback for the Horsemen in the quarterback-rich Western C last fall, made first team at defensive back and punt returner to...

  • Plains games will be aired

    Nov 30, 2017

This weekend’s Plains High School basketball games at the Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown will be on the air for those who would like to listen to them. Plains business owner and diehard Horsemen and Trotter supporter Randy Garrison said Anderson Broadcasting will stream the games live on andersonbroadcasting.com, or that folks can be directed to that site from the Plains High School web page. As he has for football and basketball games in the past, Garrison will handle the play-by-play commentary for the games, while someone else from P...

  • Carter, Brubaker, Weltz named to 6-Man squad

    Nov 30, 2017

Three Noxon Red Devil football players have been named to the Western C 6-Man all-conference team, and one of those three, senior Dakota Carter, has also earned All-State C recognition. Although he did not have a complete listing of all of the Western C selections, coach Bart Haflich said Carter, junior Levi Brubaker and sophomore Rylan Weltz were the three Red Devil gridders picked by league coaches for post season honors following the regular season of play. The Red Devils used a five-game winning streak to gain the playoffs this fall,...

  • County players earn volleyball recognition for 2017 campaign

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

Four Plains Trotters, four Hot Springs Savage Heat girls and three Noxon Lady Red Devils have been honored by being selected for the District 14C All-Conference volleyball team for the 2017 season. Plains seniors Jessica Thompson and Rachel Huenink were named first team All-14C, with Thompson being further honored as one of only two players from the district to earn All-State C recognition. Trotter seniors Kara Altmiller and Lindsay Laws were named second team all-conference. From Hot Springs, two sister pairs were honored as twins Sage and...

  • Heat move back to 6-Man game

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

Consider Hot Springs’ 8-Man football experiment a failure. After one year as an 8-Man football entity, when they could not field enough players to compete at that level and were forced into a junior varsity only schedule, Hot Springs was returned to the 6-Man ranks last week by a vote of the Montana High School Association Board of Directors. Hot Springs officials might hate to tell the MHSA we told you so, but they had petitioned the organization prior to being moved into the 8-Man game that that form of football would not work in Hot S...

  • Minus Kenny, P-HS wrestling coaches named

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

With heavy hearts, the Plains-Hot Springs wrestling team will soldier on without their regular commander in chief this season. As everyone in the city of Plains and the community of Montana prep wrestling already knows, Kenny Marjerrison will not be coaching this season due to a tragic accident that no one could have predicted only weeks before the season officially started. And, as everyone in Plains continues to attempt to deal with the loss of a great man who meant so much to so many, Plains school officials reluctantly have made...

  • Horsemen retool; set to begin play

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

Will the Horsemen be off to the races again this year? Fresh off of an impressive 20-4 season, including being the only team to defeat State C champion Arlee last year, coach Mike Cole is guardedly optimistic about his Plains boys going into this season. The Horsemen lost All-State C and District 14C first team performer Ryan Ovitt, 14C first teamer Alec Cole and second teamer Aaron VonHeeder from that team, leaving second team 14C pick Jay VonHeeder, now a senior, as Plains’ only returning all-conference player. In spite of the loss of his big...

  • Blue Hawk grapplers are ready to rock and roll in Polson

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

The wrestling deck may be stacked in Thompson Falls’ favor this winter, and coach Ian Taylor is excited about this year’s Blue Hawk grappling team as a result. “We are ready to get after it,” he said. “We have 19 kids out and a good bit of experience returning. We are thinking we could do pretty well as a team this year.” Taylor’s optimism is based on some simple facts; he has five wrestlers returning with State B-C tournament experience, and has eight seniors total on the roster. And the Hawks appear as if they could fill most of the weight...

  • Lady Devils ready

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

If there truly is strength in numbers, Bart Haflich and his Noxon Lady Red Devils are hoping that the number 6 is the strongest one of all. That’s because 6 is the number of players the Noxon girls have on their roster this season. Although there is some talk about bringing up a junior high player or two to augment the Devils’ lineup, the short number of players on hand could derail what could possibly be a pretty good season for the Noxon girls. “We have some pretty good players, just not very many of them,” Haflich said. “It would have been...

  • Red Devil boys could make noise

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

A coach for all seasons, Bart Haflich, who guides the Noxon football team in the fall and both the boys and girls basketball teams concurrently in the winter, says the hoop season snuck up on him a little bit this season. In a good kind of way. And that just might have been because of the great job he did in guiding the Red Devil football team into the State C playoffs for the first time in 18 long years. Although that did extend the football season a week, it did shorten the break between the gridiron and the basketball court a week as well....

  • Sky's the limit for Hawks

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

The sky is the limit, but the sky is crowded, too. The Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys have a very good squad going into this season. The problem is, a lot of the other teams in the Western B division are looking pretty good as well. And only two Western B teams will be moving on to the State B tourney later on this season. The Western B includes defending District 7B champion Bigfork, which did not graduate anyone from that conference-winning team, and Anaconda, which surged to a surprising second place finish in the State B tournament last...

  • Very young Heat begin anew

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

Oh very young what will you bring us this time? Though not as young as last year, the Hot Springs Lady Savage Heat will again field a very young squad, coach Richard Jackson reports, saying that he has two seniors, eight sophomores and two freshmen on the roster for the 2017-2018 season. With mostly the same cast of players, the even younger Savage Heat went 7-13 last year. Karly Lawson was a second team District 14C all-conference pick from that team and McKennzie Cannon and Stacy Gray earned 14C honorable mention. Cannon is now a sophomore...

  • Lady Hawks team in progress

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

If a little teamwork can get you a long ways, how far will a lot of teamwork take you? Coach Doree Thilmony says her Lady Hawks have been big into the tight team concept so far in practice and is hoping that translates into success on the basketball court this season. The Lady Hawks will open season play with a non-conference game against former District 7B rival Libby, which moved up to Class A this school year, in Libby Saturday. Although she has only one starter (senior Haley Morgan) back from last year’s 5-14 team, Thilmony thinks the L...

  • Trotters could be very good

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

The Trotters should be good, how good remains to be seen. One year removed from a 13-9 record and a fourth place finish in the District 14C tournament, coach Jessica Nagy and her Trotters will be aiming higher this season as they have a bevy of returning talent to work with. In addition to returning District 14C first team selections Lindsay Laws and Jessica Thompson, now both seniors, Nagy should also have seniors Rachel Huenink, Kara Altmiller and AnaLisa Loberg, juniors Haley Josephson, Natalee Deschamps and Brooklyn Stafford, and...

  • Heat boys face low numbers

    John Hamilton|Nov 30, 2017

Sorry guys, but three-on-three basketball is not an option. The body-challenged Hot Springs boys basketball team only has six players on the roster and, unlike the football team which was allowed to drop back to the 6-Man game by a vote of the MHSA (see other story), there are no other options for playing the game with less than the required five people at this time. Long-time Savage Heat coach Ricky DePoe says that his team will attempt to play their schedule, which begins with a pair of games in the Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown this...

  • Area students perform well at Science Olympiad

    Shana Neesvig|Nov 30, 2017

Students interested in science from Noxon and Thompson Falls competed in the 32nd Science Olympiad in Bozeman the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Both junior high and high school students took part in the challenge. In the high school, or Division C standings, Thompson Falls placed 21st overall. Noxon High placed 43rd. Overall 51 schools participated. Student teams from Thompson Falls placed in the top 20 in Ecology (14th), Herpetology (13th), Hovercraft (5th) and Rocks and Minerals (20th). Noxon...

  • TF PTO putting on a show

    Shana Neesvig|Nov 30, 2017

Thompson Falls Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) just wrapped up their fourth annual "Donuts with Dads" and "Muffins with Moms." But the fun is not ending there, it is just the beginning. Danielle Brotherton, PTO member, announced that instead of hosting the Santa Secret Shoppe, which has been presented at the elementary school the past few years as a means for students to purchase holiday gifts for family members, they will instead be introducing the first annual "Family Movie Night." She...
