  • UNIQUE RACK

    Ed Moreth|Dec 5, 2019

UNIQUE RACK – Is it a lucky or unlucky break? Will his antlers help or hinder his survival? The whitetail deer’s antler wasn’t recently broke, which accounts for the round tip instead of a sharp one. “It could have broke off for a variety of reasons and then never grown in. Or it could be a normal non-typical growth. It’s unique, that’s for sure,” said Dillon Tabish, the public information officer of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 1 in Kalispell. As far as being passed over by hunters, h... Full story

  • Local canine survives rare surgery

    Shana Neesvig|Dec 5, 2019

Dog – man's best friend. If you ask Scott and Brenda Crowe, God gives every living thing a purpose. According to them, their Akita dogs provide healing, laughter and compassion to those who visit Redemption Ranch, the Crowe's Christian-based, healing resort. Although all the Crowe's Akita pups have been special, one has particularly touched their hearts. Zachariah is a 2-year-old, long-hair, black Akita with white markings. He has recently gone through what the Crowe's call a miracle and are e...

  • Hunting harvest down

    Dec 5, 2019

The general big game hunting season concluded last weekend across Montana. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) tallied more than 14,000 hunters at its five check stations across Region 1 (northwest Montana) this season, including 1,726 in Thompson Falls. Region 1 hunters reported 1,022 white-tailed deer, including 816 bucks, as well as 105 mule deer and 56 elk. Despite fewer hunters than past years, the overall number of harvested deer was up over last year in the region. At the Thompson Falls check station near the Thompson Falls Rural Fire...

More than 80 people from Plains, Paradise, Thompson Falls, Dixon, Superior, and Missoula attended the hour-long free event, sponsored by the Paradise Elementary School Preservation Committee, the nonprofit organization that manages and maintains the Paradise Center. • Our Viewpoint

    Dec 5, 2019

There are so many activities, festivals and bazaars around the holiday season. Volunteers put in hundreds of hours to put on events for our communities. We hear people say "someone should hold a parade" or "someone should take over the Huckleberry Festival," whose chairperson is stepping down. The problem is, the someones seem to always be the same people. They are the movers and shakers who always step up and make sure things happen. You don't see all the work that goes into organizing a Christmas on Main Street or a youth soccer tournament....

  • Blackstone is right on

    Dec 5, 2019

Mr. Blaine Blackstone: Just now I have had the opportunity to read your article in the Sanders County Ledger (Nov. 21, 2019) entitled “Quid Pro Quo Happens.” Let me start by simply saying, “Wow! Right on!” I have privately been saying this for months. My association with the justice system is somewhat two-fold. My wife worked in a municipal court for years and my oldest brother was a Superior Court Judge in the state of Washington until his death (at times I worked as a private investigator for him). And without getting much more sidetracked in...

  • Reaching our own conclusions

    Dec 5, 2019

Dear Editor, I appreciate the overall positive writing in your paper and the transparent coverage of local news. I’m writing after reading several of Blackstone’s recent columns and especially his 21 November piece. It’s not that Blackstone is either a Trump supporter or detractor; my concern is with the lack of balance in his argument and with the lack of historical perspective. In these divisive times, my hope is that your paper will insist on arguments that are balanced in their approach and description of the subject regardless of the c...

  • Polite communication needed

    Dec 5, 2019

Oh my goodness, the TV does not work this morning. Signal loss due to weather. I suspect it is upset at me for accusing it of spying on me. No news today. Like most of you out there, I have already formed an opinion about current events anyway. I just need the news to reinforce what I already think. At least we get to learn some words we have not heard much before. One of my favorites is oligarch. I could not help but picture those short, round people with pantaloons on, dancing around the stage in The Wizard of Oz. Eventually I had to ask Mr....

  • Street Smart

    Blaine Blackstone|Dec 5, 2019

As I write this, I’m sitting in a hotel room thinking about Thanksgiving two days past. I’m in Seattle for work and not sure how long I’ll be here. Being in Seattle has made me very homesick, but it is also what caused me to reflect on all that I have to be thankful for. I know this column will appear in the Ledger a full week after the actual Thanksgiving holiday, but I still feel compelled to share my thoughts. This may ramble a bit! Being in Seattle for an extended stay has made me reali...

  • Remember When

    Sherry Hagerman-Benton|Dec 5, 2019

5 YEARS AGO • DECEMBER 4, 1969 SPRING BURSTING OUT ALL OVER The official arrival of winter is more than three weeks away, but the signs of spring are bursting out all over around Thompson Falls. Calvin Wilson displayed budding pussy willows and lilacs last week. Mrs. Edna Mooney has strawberry plants blossoming and also some green strawberries growing in her garden. And at the home of high school principal and Mrs. Gene Jones, the tulips are up and growing lustily. The evidence of spring bears out the claim of the local chamber that T...

  • Company loves misery, at least in the wilderness

    Sanders County Ledger|Dec 5, 2019

by Aaron Johnson Being outdoors has always been an integral part of my life, but there is a distinct difference between being outdoors and being in the wilderness. I've learned, forgotten and relearned this difference multiple times. The relearning part is essential. Over the past 10 years, I've backpacked many times into the proposed Scotchman Peaks Wilderness, each time with a heavy pack full of painting supplies. Filtering a wilderness experience down to a singular moment is as difficult as...

  • Pickleball gains local following

    Miriah Kardelis|Dec 5, 2019

Looking for a new active hobby that will get you through the slower months of winter? Pickleball classes have now begun for the season. Instructor, Tina Wheeler, has started teaching pickleball three nights a week to the community. As part of the adult education program sponsored by the Thompson Falls school district, these classes look to engage community involvement by contributing the local people's knowledge and passions and turning that into educational classes open to the public....

    Shana Neesvig|Dec 5, 2019

Sanders County Commissioners recently received an update on the status of Joint Operation Mariposa’s efforts to develop a Veteran Service Office (VSO) locally. “We have received letters of support for our endeavor,” Foste said, which brings him and David Williams one step closer to accomplishing their goal of obtaining the $15,000 to $20,000 required to start up the facility. Although he could not comment on the exact grants Joint Operation Mariposa was applying for, he did say there are more than one of interest. In order to apply for these...

  • Paper lanterns take messages into the night

    Ed Moreth|Dec 5, 2019

They looked like colorful stars drifting into the cold night over the Sanders County Fairgrounds Saturday night. It was the annual Chinese Lantern Launch put on by the Cancer Network of Sanders County (CNSC), a fundraiser geared to help only Sanders County people who have been diagnosed with cancer. "That is so cool looking," said Sherry McCartney as the last group of lanterns sailed over the fairground trees. One hundred and thirteen lanterns were launched during the hour-long event. All but a...

  • And away we go!

    John Hamilton|Dec 5, 2019

Call it an early Christmas gift from the sports gods – the gift of fair competition, of heavenly bodies in motion in friendly battle with like-minded individuals. Giving the gift of sports once more, the high school seasons for basketball and wrestling start this week across Montana, with a lot of that action likely happening in a gym near you. In wrestling, the Bob Owen Invitational in Polson will get things started Friday and Saturday, and the Thompson Falls Blue Hawk grapplers will be t...
