Sanders County basketball players tipped off their season at the Ronan Tip-Off Tournament last weekend. Hot Springs, Plains and Noxon competed in the tournament, which offered an opportunity to play a variety of western Montana schools. The Plains Horsemen first met the Ronan JV squad on Friday, falling 44-16. On Saturday, the Horsemen were bested by Seeley-Swan 53-14. Despite the losses, coach Tyrel Allen was proud of his young squad. "None of these kids have ever played varsity basketball,"...
Plains/Hot Springs finished fifth in their first tournament of the season, the Cascade Badger Invitational. “It was a great season opener for us,” Coach Shane Angle said. The Savage Horsemen sent seven to the finals in the tournament and two wrestled for third and fourth. The girls’ team garnered enough points to take home the first-place team trophy. “It was impressive,” Angle said. “What a surprise.” Drew Carey brought home first place from Cascade in the 132-pound bracket. Carey first pinned Jace Ashley of Three Forks in 2:50, then Eli Zach...
The Lady Hawks showed they were a force to be reckoned with Saturday as they traveled to Troy for their first game of the season last Saturday. The Hawks came home with a 63-7 win over Troy, dominating the Trojans the entire game. "We used our entire bench to play," Coach Chadd Laws stated. "Everybody got a ton of playing time and we got to work on some of our different offenses and defenses. The biggest thing was just getting more playing time together and doing what we do, pushing the ball up...
The Blue Hawk wrestlers were back on the mat over the weekend in their first competition of the season and coach Mike Thilmony was happy with the results. The team saw three wrestlers in the finals at the Bob Owen Invitational, a two-day tournament in Polson, and two won their brackets. “The Owen Invitational is a tough tournament,” Thilmony said. “Overall it was a really good weekend. We like that tournament out of the gate as we see a lot of good competition, even from Class A. It tests us early.” Senior Trae Thilmony, a two-time state champi...
Despite over an hour delay due to a power outage on Saturday, the Thompson Falls basketball teams came out en force Saturday during their first competition of the season in Troy. "I had said we were going to cancel if the power didn't come back on by 3 p.m.," Thompson Falls Athletic Director and boys' coach Jake Mickelson said, "and it came back on at 2:59." Mickelson's team ended up beating Troy 65-39. "We had five brand new varsity starters, so there were some nerves at the start," Mickelson...

Plains High School art students set out on a mission to add a little extra festive color to the windows on Main Street in Plains last week. Businesses including Mangy Moose, Rocky Mountain Bank and Wildhorse Antiques all got their windows decorated with different holiday themes. "The store gives us a theme they want painted and then we get a category of options to choose from and then we start painting," said sophomore Sam Feliksa. With several of his classmates, Feliksa chose to paint some...
