  • Trotters run past Tigers

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Don't be fooled by the Trotters' name; these Plains girls like to get out and run. There was no trotting around about it Saturday as the Trotters ran past the visiting Darby Tigers 62-42. The Trotters settled the issue early, using a 15-2 win of the second quarter to take a 35-15 lead into halftime and cruising in for the win from there. After a rather pedestrian start to the season (the Trotters edged Drummond 22-18 in Frenchtown two weeks ago), the Trotters seem to have found their running,...

  • Tigers out-point ice-cold Devils

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Points are not supposed to be this hard to come by. The St. Regis Tigers spoiled the Noxon Lady Red Devils’ home opener 31-23 in Noxon Thursday as coach Ryan Weltz’s Devils had trouble scoring from the offset. “I have to give credit where credit is due; St. Regis played good defense and took us out of our flow,” Weltz said. “But we could not seem to find our offensive groove either, it was just not our day.” Weltz’s daughter Delaney was the only Lady Devil who truly got untracked offensively against St. Regis and she scored 16 points to lea...

  • Shutout in the Shootout

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Call it growing pains of the basketball kind. The young Thompson Falls Blue Hawks hosted the boys' portion of the first-ever District 1B-7B Shootout last week, falling 52-47 to the Conrad Cowboys Friday and 76-34 to the Choteau Bulldogs Saturday at TFHS gym. Thompson Falls coach Jake Mickelson cited his team's youth and inexperience playing with each other as factors in last week's games. He thought the Hawks probably should have won the game with Conrad in any event. "We felt like we might...

  • Seconds count

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

A few extra seconds made all the difference. The Lady Hawks dropped a pair of games in the District 1B-7B Shootout in Eureka last week, falling 42-41 to Choteau Friday when some unauthorized extra time allowed the Bulldogs to pull out the last-second win, and then losing to Conrad 72-43 Saturday. Although there were only six seconds remaining with the Lady Hawks leading Choteau 41-40 Friday when the Lady Bulldogs inbounded the ball, those six seconds somehow turned into more like 13 and the ‘Dogs scored at the buzzer to pull out the win. ...

  • Hawks place four in Kinney Classic

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Although their roster was reduced due to undisclosed reasons, the Thompson Falls wrestling team stayed busy last week. Coach Ian Taylor and his temporarily reduced squad of Hawk grapplers participated in the Plains-Hot Springs quadrangular Thursday and then wrestled in the Bob Kinney Classic in Superior Saturday. A Kinney Classic championship by freshman Trae Thilmony at 113 pounds and placing efforts by three other Hawks highlighted Thompson Falls efforts in Superior. Dakota Irvine wrestled...

  • Griffin returns, Darby wins

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Dealing with the return of Griff fell squarely on the lap of new Horsemen hoops coach Tyrell Allen. The Plains Horsemen hosted the Darby Tigers Saturday in a game that marked the return of former Plains Trotter basketball coach Richard Griffin, who went by the short name of Griff while he was in Plains and probably still does in Darby as the new head man for the Tigers. Always eager to coach hoops, Griff was also on the sidelines as Darby's assistant girls coach for the other game Saturday. "I h...

  • Vanderwalls, Carey lead P-HS

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Conrad Vanderwall and Josiah Vanderwall each won second place and Peter Carey third to pace the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen in the Bob Kinney Classic wrestling tournament in Superior Saturday. The Savage Horsemen also hosted a quadrangular match including P-HS, Thompson Falls, Arlee and Eureka in Hot Springs Thursday, and wrestled in mixer action at Superior Friday evening before the Kinney Classic kicked off the next day. “We are pleased with the efforts over the three days last w...

  • Slow good

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Slow starts aside, the Noxon Red Devil boys look like they will be just fine. Coach Bart Haflich’s Devil overcame slow starts in both games last week but emerged with two more wins, topping the Clark Fork Wampus Cats 60-44 in Clark Fork Tuesday, Dec. 5, and defeating the St. Regis Tigers 53-39 in Noxon Thursday. Now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in District 14C conference play, the Devils have two games on tap this week, hosting Troy in a non-conference game Thursday and visiting the Two Eagle River Eagles in Pablo Saturday in another 14C league tilt. ...

  • View from the Sidelines

    John Hamilton|Dec 13, 2018

Now you’re just somebody that I used to know…. It gave me pause when I heard this line in a song on the radio last week and got me to thinking about all the faces and names that I have seen passing me by in this job as a sports reporter over the years. One of those faces I saw Saturday in Plains was that of a former hoops coach in that town, a guy I got to know quite well when he was in the sporting world in Sanders County. I not only got to know Richard Griffin through his coaching – either as an assistant or as later on, the head coach for t...

  • Elf-ing Around

    Dec 13, 2018

NOXON SCHOOL COOKS Louise Chandler (left) and Cristina Summers have some fun at the Noxon PTO Christmas Bazaar on Dec. 2. Proceeds from the event go to the PTO Senior Scholarship fun. Organizer Cecilia Beardsley said the group raised the most money in the last three years and thanked all the vendors and volunteers for their help....
