  • The barrage begins

    John Hamilton|Dec 14, 2017

Let the barrage of sports begin. A virtual barrage of high school sports is on tap for the next few weeks as the holiday season and its accompanying break in action rapidly approaches. The schedule for the remainder of 2017 looks to be hot and heavy on the basketball courts and wrestling mats of western Montana. In basketball, the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks will start their next week of play at Florence Thursday, will continue it Saturday hosting Valley Christian, and will wrap it up playing at Plains Tuesday. For their part, the Blue Hawk boys...

  • Red Devil boys improve to 4-0

    John Hamilton|Dec 14, 2017

Coach Bart Haflich knows that the true tests lie ahead, but his young Noxon Red Devil boys improved to 4-0 with another pair of wins last week, stopping Troy 58-52 in Troy Friday, and fighting past Clark Fork, Idaho 64-53 in Noxon Saturday. Looking at the possibility of improving to 6-0 with only one more game before the holidays left in 2017, the Devils have two home games this week, District 14C conference-counters with Two Eagle River Friday and St. Regis Saturday. Although he is glad to be 4-0 Haflich knows the schedule will only get toughe...

  • Lady Devil six splits games

    John Hamilton|Dec 14, 2017

If only the Lady Red Devils had more than six players… In spite of having only six players on their current roster, the Noxon girls improved their season record to 3-1 last week after losing 45-35 to Troy in Troy Friday and defeating Clark Fork, Idaho 41-23 in Noxon Saturday. Noxon has two home dates on tap this week, hosting Two Eagle River Friday and St. Regis Saturday. “It seemed like we ran out of gas in Troy,” coach Bart Haflich said. “We played pretty good defense for most of the game but Troy managed to hit some 3-balls late and hold us...

  • Where's the defense?

    John Hamilton|Dec 14, 2017

The Blue Hawks found some offense, now they need to find a little defense to go with it. Coach Jake Mickelson and his Hawks lost a high-scoring 88-85 decision to Gardiner in the second round of the Three Forks Invitational Saturday, and left the Hawks asking themselves a nagging question. “We are trying to figure out how we can score 85 points and still lose,” Mickelson said. “We came alive on offense against Gardiner, now we just need to figure out how to rebound and defend better.” Now 0-3 after also losing to Big Timber 75-58 Friday in Thre...

  • Lady Hawks don't back down - win

    John Hamilton|Dec 14, 2017

Lady Hawk coach Doree Thilmony does not want her team backing down to anyone, and that includes the powerful Three Fork Wolves, who are coming off a third place finish from the State B tourney last year with virtually everyone back from that team. The Hawks lost to the far-better-than-average Wolves 68-34 in the Three Forks Invitational Friday before coming back to defeat Gardiner 50-17 in the tournament Saturday. Now 1-2 in non-conference play, Thilmony and her Lady Hawks hit the road for a game at Florence Thursday before returning home to...

  • Trotters break into win column ad Darby

    John Hamilton|Dec 14, 2017

The Plains Trotters broke into the win column Friday with a 55-38 victory over Darby in Darby. Now 1-2 in non-conference play, coach Jessica Nagy and her Trotters begin their District 14C schedule playing at Charlo Friday. The Trotters will host rival Thompson Falls in another non-conference contest Tuesday. Jessica Thompson scored 15 points and Kylee Altmiller 11 to lead the Trotters to the win at Darby, Lindsay Laws added nine points, Kara Altmiller seven, Haley Josephson and Brooklyn Stafford five apiece and AnaLisa Loberg three. Peyton...

  • Conspicuously good

    John Hamilton|Dec 14, 2017

For supposedly being in a rebuilding mode, the Plains Horsemen seem conspicuously good so far this season. The Horsemen ran their record to 3-0 by galloping past the Darby Tigers 65-26 in Darby Friday. Although he lost three all-conference players off of last year’s squad, which built a 20-4 record including the only defeat of State C champion Arlee last winter, coach Mike Cole does not seem surprised that this year’s team is doing so well so far. “We lost some good players off that team but we still have a bunch of kids with experience in ou...
