The American Red Cross returned to Thompson Falls High School last Wednesday, to get volunteers to give blood. They brought with them equipment to take blood donations in the regular fashion as well as a special type of apparatus for taking blood in a different way. The second donation method is called Power Red, and by donating through this machine, blood givers can now double their potential donation power. Stephanie Lefeuvre, an American Red Cross phlebotomist, explained that Power Red...
It could have been the battle of the century in Plains - Santa Claus versus the Grinch - at the one-room log schoolhouse. But the Grinch's heart did its growth thing and played nice with the kids - most of the time. This was the second year for Santa and Mrs. Claus to listen to the kids' Christmas wishes and hand out toys at the old schoolhouse along Railroad Street. While the Claus' gave gifts, the Grinch gave the kids candy canes and periodically chased them about on Saturday. This was the...
Every year, Sanders County Coalition for Families (SCCFF) helps make Christmas a little extra special for families in the county. With the help and generosity of area residents, SCCFF’s Adopt a Family program is always a success. Right before Christmas, SCCFF reaches out to families they have helped to get a list of needs and wishes for the holiday season. This will be the first year Kayla Torres will be running the program. According to Torres, SCCFF will be helping 10 families this year and she was blown away by the community’s response to...
The flags might have been worn out, but the patriotism of the men and women who handled the unserviceable ensigns last week was not. Fourteen veterans from all five branches of the military gathered in the rear parking lot of VFW Post 3596 in Plains last Tuesday to take part in the annual flag retirement. The veterans took on a somber and reserved stance as they placed Old Glory in barrels of the flames that slowly transformed the splendid red, white and blue into gray and black ashes. "We honor...
It's that time of year again. The hustle and bustle of the holidays, school Christmas concerts, rushing to find those last-minute gifts. As happens every year, we're now experiencing those lovely winter roads throughout Sanders County. The state, county and city crews have been busy plowing, salting and maintaining the 1,510 miles of roadways in Sanders County. I've already heard some comments about crews not getting to roads quick enough, but I can't imagine the undertaking it is to clear all of Sanders County quickly and safely. As motorists,...
The last of the Thanksgiving turkey was finally dispensed of just a few hours ago. You might have imagined I could put my feet up and relax with a nice glass of cabernet and quiet, but no, it's already begun. The phone rings, "Are you done with dinner?" my brother asks. "Sure," I say, "What's up?" "What do you guys want for Christmas?" Silence. I should be ready with an answer, but I have not thought of the next holiday because the dishwasher is still cleaning the glassware from the last. Well,...
On December 20, aircraft piloted by either Santa or Mrs. Claus will land at the Thompson Falls airport. Arrival time is approximately 11:15-11:30 a.m. Red Sleighs Over Montana, sponsored and paid for by the Museum of Mountain Flying in Missoula and donations from the public, will send aircraft, fixed wing and helicopters, to 23 rural towns in Montana and two rural towns in the Idaho panhandle. This is an enormous logistical effort and some aspects are more difficult to coordinate than others. Schools at these sites go on Christmas vacation on...

Tuesday in 20th District Judicial Court, Andre Levert was given a suspended three-year sentence with the Department of Corrections (DOC) as per a plea agreement for the charge of assault with a weapon. James Manley explained that Levert’s sentence took into consideration that this was his first felony. “I just want to go out and get a job and do well for myself,” Levert said prior to sentencing. Levert was arrested after striking a Thompson Falls man with an object several times earlier this year. His sentencing required him to pay restitution...

The Thompson Falls City Council met this week to swear in Mayor Mark Sheets and council members Larry Lack, Shawni Vaught and Earlene Powell. Each was re-elected into their respective positions uncontested. Sheets reported at Monday’s meeting that City Hall may be facing some significant roof repairs. A crew that was hired to extend the roof over the front steps of City Hall discovered rotting issues in the existing porch roof. The crew had been working to bring the porch out to protect the steps from water dripping down and icing over them. ...
The Thompson Falls School Board decided last week to allow visitors to enter the school again. Prior to the decision, parents and volunteers were loosely limited to 15 minutes, and certain parent and volunteer activities were disallowed altogether because of the pandemic. Now, visitors can enter the school once again, but must self-screen through a checklist posted at the front desk and provide their phone number for contact tracing. Each classroom teacher can decide if they will allow visitors and volunteers into their classroom, and people...
Hagedorn Land Surveying has sold and is under new ownership as of November 1 of this year. Mountain Plains, the company that bought Hagedorn, will continue to offer the same services, including planning and land surveying. An added benefit resulting from the merger is civil engineering, according to owner, Tony Wood. Mountain Plains opened in Bismarck, North Dakota in 2009 after Wood graduated college. With offices in Bismarck and Waterford City, North Dakota, he then expanded to Montana with...

On November 21, 2021, my dad, James I. Mershon, took the final few steps needed to enter heaven. He did so knowing that his three children, Barbara, Karen, and Mike and their spouses Greg, Jim and Rebecca will circle Jan, his wife of nearly 62 years, with love and whatever comfort and support she needs. He was also fully aware that behind that first layer of support is another with nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren ready to step in when necessary, as is his sister-in-law and her... Juanita Miller Deardorff, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend peacefully passed away on December 4, 2021, in her home in Plains, Montana. On January 8, 1961, she was born in Junction City, Kansas, to Bobbie and Rosemary Miller, little sister to Butch and Vicki. Nita's childhood was filled with family road trips across the country, horseback riding, stock car racing (and a little street racing) and hanging out in Rompot with some of her lifelong childhood friends.... FORD BRONCO SPORT FIRST TO FEATURE PARTS MADE OF 100% RECYCLED OCEAN PLASTIC “Ford has become the first automaker to use 100% recycled ocean plastics to produce automotive parts. Wiring harness clips in Ford Bronco Sport models are made of ocean-harvested plastic—commonly referred to as “ghost gear.” The strength and durability of the nylon material equals that of previously used petroleum-based parts but with a 10% cost savings and requiring less energy to produce. The small parts represent a large first step in the company’s plans to produc...
In their mission to provide continuous care and support to their animals, Thompson River Animal Care Shelter (TRACS) is asking for a little extra help this holiday season. TRACS has put together two different holiday raffle baskets and has organized a silent auction in order to raise funds for the shelter. "We have had a tremendous amount of medical expenses come up within the last couple of months," said TRACS operations manager, Wanda Thorpe. "We have a lot of puppies and kittens with a...
