  • Keg Bowl set for Dec. 30

    Dec 21, 2017

So old men, you think you can still play some football? Here is your once-a-year chance to prove it. The 37th annual Keg Bowl, also known as the Blue Hawk Grid Iron Club Scholarship Bowl, will be played at the old mill site east of Thompson Falls on Saturday, Dec. 30. Grid Iron Club president Doug Willhite says that, as usual the game will kickoff at 1 p.m., and that players are asked to show up a little early armed with a dark and a light jersey, for the drafting of teams, and the ceremonial drafting of the keg for which this game was...

  • Lady Hawks top Valley girls

    John Hamilton|Dec 21, 2017

The thrill of victory; the agony of defeat. Coach Doree Thilmony and her Lady Hawks experienced both ends of the spectrum in games last week, falling 59-15 to powerful Florence in Florence Thursday before returning home and blasting Valley Christian 49-17 in Thompson Falls Saturday. Thilmony thinks that Florence might be the class of the Western B division this season. "They got up on us right away, that is a very good team," she said. "We played hard but it was hard to come back after falling...

  • Lady Vikes defeat Trotters

    Dec 21, 2017

It looks like life could be a little bit rough in District 14C girls basketball this season. For an example look no further than to coach Jessica Nagy and her Plains Trotters. Favored to be one of the contenders for the crown in the conference, the Trotters opened 14C play Thursday with a 44-37 loss in Charlo to the Lady Vikings, one of the several other teams expected to contend for league honors in what looks to be a very even-Steven conference this season. The Trotters made a mad rush at the Vikings late, outscoring Charlo 18-8 in the fourth...

  • Savage Horsemen win Buzz Lucey title

    John Hamilton|Dec 21, 2017

What you don't know can help you. The Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen were not thinking about winning the Buzz Lucey tournament in Eureka Saturday until somebody looked up the team scores on the Track wrestling website right before the championship round. "We were surprised to learn we were in first place," P-HS coach Jeff Kujala said. "We knew we had had a pretty good day but we weren't really thinking about a team trophy. Then somebody looked up the team scores; it ended up working out...

  • Wood hits floor, Devils hold on to defeat Two Eagle

    John Hamilton|Dec 21, 2017

Basketball can be a rough and tumble game, just ask Noxon junior Logan Wood. Wood took a fall, hit the floor and had a Two Eagle River player fall on his head, breaking his nose and loosening several teeth, during the Red Devils’ 47-42 District 14C conference win over the Eagles in Noxon Friday. “He got a mild concussion out of it and didn’t play anymore that night or against St. Regis the next,” coach Bart Haflich said. “We should get him back this week but it turned out to be good for us playing without him against Two Eagle. Our younger k...

  • Hawks 16th in CMR Holiday tourney

    John Hamilton|Dec 21, 2017

The Thompson Falls Blue Hawks tied for 16th place in team scoring and put three grapplers on the podium as placers in the CM Russell Holiday Classic at Great Falls last week. Going without one of their top guns in Jase Sorenson, the Hawks’ dominating 170-pounder, coach Ian Taylor’s Falls guys still scored 78 team points to tie the Forsyth Dogies for 16th place in the 53-team event. In addition to being without Sorenson, who has already won two tourney titles this year and was second at 170 in the State B-C last winter, the Hawks also went wit...

  • Wanting to be unwanted

    John Hamilton|Dec 21, 2017

The team that nobody wants to play at tournament time; that’s the team that the Hot Springs Lady Savage Heat want to be. Coach Richard Jackson and his promising, young Savage Heat split District 14C conference games last week, waylaying Two Eagle River 54-17 in Pablo Thursday before returning home and falling to the Arlee Scarlets 53-31 in Hot Springs Saturday. Now 1-1 in 14C action and 2-2 overall, Hot Springs teams wrap up play for 2017 with non-conference games in Missoula versus Valley Christian Thursday and at Mission Friday. Jackson likes...

  • Horsemen pass hoop test

    John Hamilton|Dec 21, 2017

Consider test No. 1 passed. Now, in very short order, here come test Nos. 2 and 3. Fresh off a 66-56 win over Charlo in Charlo Friday in their first major test of the season, coach Mike Cole and his 3-0 Plains Horsemen have two more stout tests coming this week, hosting the dangerous 2-3 Thompson Falls Blue Hawks in a non-conference tilt for Sanders County bragging rights Tuesday (results of that game were not available at press time) and then welcoming the undefeated, defending State C champion Arlee Warriors to Plains Thursday. The game with...

  • Heat boys keep getting better

    John Hamilton|Dec 21, 2017

Wins and losses are not the most important thing for the Hot Springs Savage Heat boys this basketball season. Never surrendering and improving every day are the goals for coach Ricky DePoe and his undermanned Heat. Going with only six players this season, the Heat dropped a pair of District 14C conference games last week, falling 74-43 to Two Eagle River in Pablo Thursday and 95-19 to Arlee in Hot Springs Saturday. Up this week for the Heat are road games with Valley Christian in Missoula Thursday and against Mission in St. Ignatius Friday....

  • Getting to know you ... Tess Tessier

    Shana Neesvig|Dec 21, 2017

When you live in a small community, it seems "everyone knows everything, about everyone." Honestly, as a "Small Towner," I take pride in that. But, it seems the longer I live here, the more I realize how little I actually know about my common folk. So each month I will venture, randomly choose a local resident, and share more about the people who make Sanders County so incredibly special. Just when you thought you knew Tess Tessier... Tessier is no stranger to the area, graduating as a Red Devil...
