Thompson Falls Veterinary Clinic has welcomed a new veterinarian to the area. Associate veterinarian Kelsey Rehm started her position in April of this year. After her husband received a job with Fish Wildlife and Parks, the pair, both originally from Montana, moved back to the state from Spokane. "It was really exciting to be able to come back home," Rehm said. Rehm did her undergraduate at Montana State University and received a degree in animal science. She then spent the remaining three years...
A blanket of thick white snow covers a field on Christmas Day. Sanders County enjoyed a white Christmas with snow storms over the weekend. More snow is expected in the area throughout this week....
Hunting regulation proposals for the 2022-2023 seasons were approved for public comment by the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission in December and are now out for review and comment online through January 14, 2022. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) will hold public meetings throughout the state to provide information and answer questions, including in northwest Montana. In Sanders County, the public meeting will be Wednesday, January 5, in the cafeteria at Thompson Falls Elementary. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. At the meeting,...
Even with Christmas vacation looming and the students' attention span fading fast last week, the teachers at Plains Elementary School were able to get the subject of science across and make it fun with the school's very first "Science Day." And they got a little help from a high school physics class. The 300 feet of elementary school halls were jam-packed with a vast variety of science material, intermixed with a touch of Christmas. The kids put their artistic talents to work for a portion of...
It seemed like each month in 2021, we were asking, "How is it already (insert month here)?" Now look at us. Just a matter of hours to finish all those things we swore we would get done this year. It wasn't that long ago that the county was recovering from the windstorm of January 2021. Residents experienced property damage from falling trees and some were without power for days. Crews worked tirelessly to restore power. The year 2021 continued with the uncertainty of the coronavirus. We saw hundreds more cases in Sanders County and a rising...
Ever wonder why the whole Senate so quickly and easily passed the Defense build up bill of $768 billlion, but did not and will not work together to pass the Build Back Better bill that would bring the USA into the modern era and help all Americans? Who actually benefits from this defense spending while there is so much need at home? Inquiring mind. Respectfully, Dawn Gandalf, Trout Creek...
First of all, I would like to congratulate Dan Rowan on his joining the Sanders County Board of Commissioners! Sounds like he is a good choice and I wish him well. I am writing this letter to object to Ed Moreth’s biased reporting of the story (Dec. 2). When Mr. Moreth wrote about supporters of Greg Hinkle signing a petition, he put in his own interpretation to slant the story. The petitioners (and there were close to 400) did not insist that Mr. Hinkle be selected. The petitioners asked that Mr. Hinkle be selected. These words have very differ...
4 YEARS AGO • MARCH 30, 1900 THOMPSON STREET BUSY IN 1900 From The Plainsman Continued from last week The largest business house in the town is that of John Willis, who occupies three buildings on main street, besides having a fine fireproof warehouse, and a warehouse on the railroad for hay, grain, and feedstuffs. He carries almost every necessity that man wants from clothing to footwear, from groceries to meat. He deals in cash only and makes prices accordingly. He has built up a great b...

My father grew up in a town on the outskirts of Zurich, Switzerland, with his sister and five brothers. The lucky boy had the Alps at his fingertips. He often spoke of the adventures he took with his older siblings, wandering from one mountain village to the next. He would hike to his heart's content and then take the PostAuto bus or the tram back to his hometown. Listening to his adventurous tales of exploring the Swiss countryside, I often dreamt of being there too. In my mind I could see the...
Plains High School students gathered before break last week for their annual Brain Bash. The event has been held for many years and required student teams to compete against other teams across the school in various games. This year, each of the 15 games were held in 15 classrooms, where devious teachers designed mini games to test the students' skill, memory and even their dance skills. Each game granted the possibility of winning a team 100 points, which would go to the team's overall score....
The Blue Hawk wrestlers gave their home crowd a holiday show last Tuesday as they welcomed Superior and Mission-Charlo for a mixer. The Hawks won seven of their 12 matches in their first home meet of the season, and the last matchups before the team went on break for the holidays. Blue Hawk Shane Reishus of Noxon pinned both his opponents, first taking William Buchanan of Superior to the mat in 57 seconds, then pinning Chance Bockman of Mission as the buzzer sounded at the end of the first...
Thompson Falls senior Trae Thilmony got a little Christmas bonus last week when he was named to the East-West Shrine Game roster. Thilmony is among the best in the west in football and will play in the Montana East-West Shrine Game in June 2022. The all-star game will be held in Great Falls and the Blue Hawk was selected as a linebacker for the west team. The annual event helps raise money for Shriner's Hospital in Spokane. Senior Kyle Lawson of Hot Springs also made the East-West roster as a...
The Savage Horsemen wrestling team got in one last night of matches before they went on break last week for the holidays. The team traveled to Bigfork for a mixer with Plains, Eureka, Browning, Arlee and Florence-Carlton. The teams had to get creative to get matches, with some wrestlers bumping up weight classes to receive opponents. One of the highlights of the evening was for Lilly MacDonald, who had her first win against Drew Knoll of Arlee. “She’s lost to him every time she’s met him on the mat, but she pinned him at the end of the first...
As winter begins to close its firm grip over Montana and the hours of the day turn mostly into darkness, many find themselves with a case of cabin fever. Some will use the extra time indoors to catch up on work, while others will use that time to craft. This year, I have found myself taking on a lot of promises I have made throughout the year. Once you let someone know you can make something, there is no shortage of Christmas and birthday present requests. It is always better in my mind to trade things made by hand and from the heart than...
Located in Hot Springs, a local radio station focuses on the intent of creating community engagement and community awareness. Program Director David Max launched 101.9 FM in December of 2016. “My focus is to broadcast news and information twenty-four-seven,” Max said. “You’ll hear a lot of information and podcasts specific to women’s health and emotional issues, alcoholism, substance abuse issues and anything that will help the community to raise vibrational awareness.” The station operates on a low power frequency modulation and is fully li...

After many years of searching for an appropriate play to take students to, Thompson Falls High School English teacher Pam Peters has finally pulled something together. Peters has been wanting to use money from a general English department fund that has been untouched for over 10 years. She has a passion for musicals and thought it would be a perfect way to use the money and to give high school students a great life experience. Peters had been waiting for an opportunity to come by but explained that “We had been trying to find a play that w...
Sanders County athletes are taking a break from competition for the holidays, but Noxon, Thompson Falls and Plains had one last game last Tuesday before school let out. Thompson Falls boys and girls traveled to Noxon on December 21, with the Hawks beating the Red Devils in both games. For the boys, Thompson Falls and Noxon were well matched throughout the game, with the Hawks outscoring the Red Devils by only three points in the first quarter and one in the second. Thompson Falls ended up...
