A group of firefighters from the Plains-Paradise Rural Fire District are in California helping fight wildfires. Chief James Russell along with Zach Vanderwall, Levi Reed and Callahan Larson left Saturday and arrived in California on Monday. Two engine strike teams traveled together. The Plains-Paradise crew is on Montana Strike Team 1, Russell said. "We send resources out of the district to help support the regional and national firefighting effort," Russell stated. "We want to return the help...
Editor, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”, is a well known quote by Karl Marx in 1875. This is a basic tenet of Marxism/Communism. This is what HB 819, passed by our legislature in 2023, accomplishes. The bill allocated $175 million out of general fund tax dollars and $50 million out of coal tax funds for financial assistance to lower income home-buyers. Do you ever wonder where the tax money you pay goes? Each county must vote to accept or reject the funding. The Flathead County Commissioners recognized the...

The Forest Service invites the public to provide feedback on the Eddy Creek Road Access Project on the Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District. The project proposes to issue a special use permit to a private landowner of a 196-acre inholding to maintain and have unlimited motorized access to their property via Forest Road 7579-1. This project is located approximately 11 miles northwest of Plains, MT, in the Eddy Creek drainage. The private inholding previously belonged to State Mining Company, who was granted a permit to build, use, and maintain...
The first Plains Town Council meeting of the new year last Monday was completed within 30 minutes, but its members added two people to the Planning Board and gave an update on various items to the four people in attendance. John Dossett, who was added to the council last October, volunteered to be the council's representative on the Plains Planning Board, along with Plains resident Vicki Evans. Both were unanimously approved. It was a full council with Councilmen John Sheridan and Chad Cantrell...

The Savage Horsemen brought home a champion from one of the toughest wrestling competitions of the season last weekend. John Waterbury won the 157-pound bracket at the Cut Bank Invitational, a two-day intense tournament. The Plains-Hot Springs team finished 13 out of 59 teams, securing 103.5 points. Waterbury’s path to the top of the podium started with three technical falls in a row, 16-1, 18-1, 18-1. In the semifinal round, Waterbury pinned Huntley Project’s Ryder Bingen in the first period. That put him in the championship match with Tur...
Last week was busy for the Thompson Falls basketball teams, and it also had a historic moment. The Blue Hawks played three games last week, and senior Bryson LeCoure scored his 1,000th point of his high school career. LeCoure entered the 1,000-point club last Thursday at Loyola. It was also a historic night for Loyola as coach Scott Anderson carded his 500th win with the Rams. THOMPSON FALLS 71, MISSION 42 The Blue Hawks started the week last Tuesday in Mission. The Hawks scored two baskets...

A former Thompson Falls woman who was convicted of deliberate homicide has been granted a new trial. Nearly four years after appealing to the Montana Supreme Court, Danielle Wood’s 2021 conviction for deliberate homicide has been reversed, with the case being remanded back to the Sanders County District Court for a new jury trial. The original jury trial, held before former District Judge Deborah “Kim” Christopher, spanned two weeks during January 2021, ending in a guilty verdict for Wood in the May 2018 deliberate homicide of Matthew LaFri...
Winter has finally arrived, though the frosting on my small forest looks more like December than January. Thankfully, the frosting is much thicker on our mountains. I’ve not had to use the snowblower or shovel down here — at least not yet. Up there is plenty to ski on. Those who first took me skiing put me in leather boots and Head 210s at the Alpine Shop in the day lodge at Schweitzer. Then, they loaded me on Chair Two (nee Baby Bear) and waved goodbye. By 1 pm, I was beat up, soaking wet, blue cold, frustrated beyond anger and completely dem...
Come on bakers. Don’t buy that dozen eggs for $5 and $7. Instead you can substitute 1/4 cup yogurt for two or three eggs when baking. Also instead of 1/2 cup oil, use unsweetened applesauce. Happy cooking! June Smith, Trout Creek...
Yesterday, Sat. 1/4/25, I attended a gathering in Noxon to learn more about the bridge, to hear from elected officials & what we can do to bring more attention to decision makers. Tony Cox, Dan Rowan, & a rep. from Zinke's Flathead office, Steve Howke, was there. The organizer of this gathering reached out to all local, state & federal elected officials, with minimal or no response. [Where were Paul Fielder and Greg Hertz? Inquiring mind here.] I am not a resident of Noxon, nor have I been to Noxon almost ever, but I was nudged to attend to...

Rocketman Pyros traveled almost 150 miles last week to send more than 1,000 shells into the darkness for the annual New Year’s nighttime extravaganza fireworks show at Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort. As the 167 guests at the resort’s Paradise Hall sang “Auld Lang Syne” — the traditional song to say farewell to the old year at midnight — played by the Missoula band Northern Lights, the fireworks burst to cast a myriad of colors over the Clark Fork River. The show lasted only six minutes, but received a huge applause from those at the event center an...
Plains started out the new year with big wins and a near clean sweep last week with a faceoff against Troy. The girls and boys junior varsity squads and girls varsity claimed victories, but the boys varsity was defeated. The Horsemen JV boys took down the Trojans 54-37 with Luciano Ferranti leading the team with 21 points. The Trotters JV team triumphed over the Lady Trojans 41-36 at home at Friday's game and Haydn Rice led in points with 20. Despite 13 points chalked up by Horseman Zayden...
My 2024 goal was to read 175 books. I was able to squeak out 177, I still can’t believe it! My main problem in December was wanting to pick up and begin a ton of books without finishing any of the ones I started because I am so inspired by the ESO Program through the Woman’s Club that I just learned out and now my TBR list has exploded. The idea behind ESO is to pursue self-improvement through education, specifically through reading and discussion. It’s right up my alley and I can’t believe I never knew about it before. Despite startin...
In recognition of National Radon Action Month, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is offering Montana residents a free radon test kit during the month of January to assess radon levels in their homes. Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that can enter homes through miniscule cracks in the foundation or around utility pipes and can build up in homes over time. Radon forms from the breakdown or decay of uranium in soil, rock and water. Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels can increase the risk of lung...

A District Court judge has resigned before even taking office. Last week, attorney Kenneth Britton "Britt" Cotter of Polson submitted his letter of resignation to Chief Justice Michael McGrath of the Montana Supreme Court, citing criminal charges Cotter is facing. According to a press release from the Montana Attorney General's office, an investigation by the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) revealed Cotter, 48, tried to purchase cocaine on more than one occasion between March 2022 to May 2023. DCI was originally called in to...
A new automotive repair business in Thompson Falls opened in November with a passion for fixing vehicles and helping veterans. Josh and Miranda Helgert operate American Classics Garage at 360 Mount Silcox Drive in Thompson Falls. The business is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays by appointment. Josh said that his love of vehicles and fixing them started when he was 8 years old. "My first vehicle was a 1949 Willys Jeep pickup," he said. "I bought it when I was 8 and put...

The Paradise Center had a plan to combat the winter blues and educate people about local history with an open house. The center's volunteer staff held the open house to offer something for people to do who might otherwise just stay home at this time of the year, said Karen Thorson, the board secretary and one of a handful of guides for the open house Thursday and Friday. "We like to be open for residents to bring their families and friends during the holidays. Some area residents haven't had...
