For actors that tend to be on the shy side, the play put on by the Paradise Players last weekend was perfect for them. All were behind partial or full masks for "The Works: A Grass Menagerie," a comedy about life on the farm from the animals' perspective. The play, written by Robb Willoughby of Ohio, was one story, but divided into eight segments, all related to the central theme. Chickens, cows, pigs, sheep, crows, horses, dogs, cats, and even wolves are the stars of the two-hour long play,...

THOMPSON FALLS 3, TROY 0 Thompson Falls sent Troy home early last Thursday as the Hawks beat the Trojans in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-6 and 25-8. It may have taken the Hawks a bit to warm up in the first set, as the teams went point for point and neither team was able to get a lead of more than two points. But with the score 16-13, the Hawks went into overdrive and didn't look back. They finished the first set and in the second, capitalized on some Troy errors to take a more dominant lead....
The veteran suicide rate continues to grow but that doesn’t stop one veteran in Plains from his objective of getting the word out about the troublesome issue, just as he did last month for Suicide Awareness Month. Starting on Aug. 31, each night Ed Foste and a volunteer added 22 American flags to the display — representing the 22 veterans who die by suicide each day. Foste and Bill Beck of Plains added the final batch to the display last Monday evening. This is the seventh year for the Vet...
A September to Remember! Gorgeous weather and a steady market. This is one of the most abundant closing markets for the real estate season and a beautiful interest rate drop will most certainly help this along. The election is heating up, with instability sending people our way once again. They feel safe in the mountains. . . and so do we! As to the real estate market, the seasonality is setting in with fewer new listings on the market. Those older loans with low interest rate loans are also...

Autumn is always such chaos: back to school, bucking wood for winter, soccer, Noxon’s Fall Festival, 4-H enrollment, STEAM month (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics), Halloween, and Thanksgiving. It feels like there’s no time for reading despite opportunities to get more books, like the upcoming Thompson Falls Public Library Book Sale on October 26. I find my TBR pile expanding, the books on my side table stacking higher, the monthly Wrap-Up from The StoryGraph looking chintzy. Despite the chaos, I read twelve books in Sep...

COLUMBIA FALLS 9, THOMPSON FALLS 2 The Thompson Falls/Plains/St Regis Lady Hawk soccer team hit the road taking on the Columbia Falls Wildcats, falling 9-2. The Hawks came out fighting in the first half and were quick to gain the first goal, the Wildcats wouldn’t be able to get past the Thompson defense for their own goal. The teams would fight up and down the field for much of the first half until Katherine Wrobleski was assisted by Elizabeth Weedeman for a Hawk goal putting them up two to zero. Columbia Falls was able to break past the H...
Records were meant to be broken, and Saturday at Thompson Falls' home cross country meet, nearly every record was broken. "That kid from Plains almost caught up to the four-wheeler." That was the reaction of other competitors on Saturday as Simeon Costner of Plains tied the course record of 11 minutes, 17 seconds, at the 24th annual Thompson Falls cross country event. Sophomore Marina Tulloch broke the course record for the girls by nearly a minute. In the junior high girls race, Quinn Delaney o...
I submitted an open letter request for written responses to the Hot Springs Board of Trustees and Superintendent on September 10, 2024. My request addressed issues concerning the budget, school audits, spending controls and other items. I tried to get it added to the agenda for the September 12, 2024, board meeting but was told that it was within 48 hours of the meeting. I was told by Superintendent Chuinard and one board member to submit it for the correspondence section of the upcoming board meeting. The board meeting was held and lo and...
13 YEARS AGO • SEPTEMBER 6, 1939 NEEDED BADLY New Court House Advocated as Post-War Project Petitions are now being circulated throughout Sanders County requesting the Board of County Commissioners to call for an election to bond for a new court house. The election will be held at the same time as the general election in November. The proposal calls for a $95,000 ten-year bond issue. With very low interest rates prevailing now it appears to be an opportune time to plan for this much-needed p...

The Plains School Board met last week with a full audience of 39 people, 12 of whom were teaching staff. Several audience attendees were there for the public participation on the non-agenda items. Plains High School math teacher questioned the board about the school canceling field trips. "I would like to know why there has been cancellation of school field trips. They are important to our student's education," Brown said. Both Elementary Principal Kevin Meredith and Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Walsh said they have not been canceled. Dr. Walsh...
