Nearly 50 people, including a dozen Mermaids (girls) and five Tritons (boys) took part in the race, which looped around several roads before finishing back at the school. The Clark Fork Valley Elks is kicking off the summer season with some fresh faces and fresh ideas. Michelle Blackstone was recently voted in as Exalted Ruler for the non-profit organization. The exalted ruler essentially acts as a president for the group, which operates a bar and restaurant east of Thompson Falls. The Elks also hired local chef Mark Oquist as its bar manager. Students at Thompson Falls Elementary School recently completed the Running Start program, sponsored by the GFWC Thompson Falls Woman's Club. Kids completed logs of their reading through the month of April. Each sheet filled with chapters or books read entered the student into a drawing. An estimated 400 people turned out for Saturday's seasonal grand opening of the National Bison Range, which included the 19-mile Red Sleep Mountain Drive and the visitor's center.
