Montana's millions of acres of private land offer some excellent hunting opportunities—the only catch is gaining the landowner's permission to hunt. It is Montana law that hunters obtain landowner permission to hunt on all private land. Here are a few things to keep in mind that will greatly improve results when attempting to secure hunting access to private land. • Show courtesy to the landowner and make hunting arrangements by calling or visiting at times convenient to the landowner. • Plan ahead and secure permission well in advance of th...
The kneeling silhouetted soldier is back once again on the greenway in Plains to bring military veteran suicide awareness to the public's eye, but now he's accompanied by the likeness of a female soldier to represent woman veterans that have been the victims of suicide. "Women served in the military, too, and they commit suicide, too - same with spouses of men in the military," said Ed Foste, who retired from the Navy and suffers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from days of carrier...
Hot Springs Senior Center held their annual fundraiser at the end of August and while the turnout was smaller compared to previous years, board president Lyn Sheldon says they still have good community support. "We have very generous supporters," Sheldon said. "Buck's Grocery was a tremendous supporter for this fundraiser." This year's barbecue fundraiser only brought in $270 and Sheldon says Buck's Grocery donated all the hot dogs and buns. "Everything has been slow and continues to be slow...
The second public meeting to address future growth plans in Plains took place at the end of August with discussions focusing on the priorities of the community as the planning group in charge of creating a growth policy, continues their involvement as they work toward developing and building a future growth policy. While the first meeting centered around a heated debate on affordable housing, the second meeting showed to be more productive as the nearly dozen attendees were able to discuss the planning study results that will aid in the...
In the middle of his 56-county tour, Gov. Greg Gianforte made a stop in Thompson Falls last week to discuss forest management. Included in that conversation was Sheriff Tom Rummel, County Commissioners Tony Cox and Glen Magera, State Senator Bob Brown, District 13 Representative Paul Fielder, Public Service Commissioner Jennifer Fielder and four community members. Gianforte began his day in Frenchtown giving high fives to the local first graders as they went into their second day of school. The...
Plains School officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate its new multi-use facility Thursday afternoon. What seemed impossible to a group of volunteers became possible, and a new film is telling the grassroots story of how it happened. "Return to the Big Skies – The Story Miss Montana to Normandy" is a documentary screening this month that tells the story of the Museum of Mountain Flying's effort to restore a WWII aircraft in time for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. "It is really hard to describe. Good things just keep happening," said Bryan Douglass with the Museum of Mountain Flying, one of t...

One Sanders County organization has discovered an ingenious way to put old worn out bicycles to good use. They might have flat tires, broken chains, missing seats, bent frames, and are peppered with rust, but together, with their mismatched colors, styles and sizes, they have a purpose - a flashy fence. The Paradise Center's bike fence presently has 24 bikes along a railing that separates the two parking lots. One of the latest bicycles was a Sears 24-inch single speed from Paradise resident...
Upgrades to the Thompson Falls Airport are progressing. In 2020, the airport received $733,276 in federal grant funding for improvements including upgrades to the runway lighting. "The 2020 grant was always intended to be coupled with a future 2021 project grant," said Lance Bowser, Airport Group Manager at Robert Peccia and Associates, the firm who has represented Thompson Falls and Plains airports since the mid-90s. The $3.4 million project began its construction on July 6 of this year and is...

Finally, with a little help from above in the form of welcome rains, this firestorm of 2021 seems to be mercifully over. The Thorne Creek fire, the big event in Thompson Falls all summer long as it has worked its way southeast along the slopes of Silcox Mountain from its original starting point in the Graves Creek area, was stopped in its tracks last week when rainstorms moved into western Montana and thoroughly soaked Sanders County’s biggest wildfire of the year. Ignited by lightning back on July 7, the Thorne Creek fire has dominated the h...
The Sanders County Fair’s green, green grass will start filling with feet on Sept. 2, the beginning of fair week, and by week’s end the smooth dirt of the main arena will be torn up, possibly still showing crash evidence with car parts on the surface from the fair’s biggest event — the demolition derby. Manager Melissa Cady said the fair is going to be amazing this year with 25 food and drink vendors and 150 commercial vendors — a record — and will include world famous chainsaw carver Steven Higgins of Missouri, who will be auctioning...
On August 15, the Thorne Creek fire began to quickly back down into the Thompson River canyon toward numerous homes and structures along the river. Overnight, the fire grew 6,157 acres, with the majority of that growth into the Thompson River drainage. With resources stretched thin across the west, and most of the United States at Fire Preparedness Level 5, the fire teams working structure protection had to work fast in extreme conditions. "The rain has put the brakes on this thing [the fire]...
Food, a shower and a safe place to sleep when not on the front lines; these are the basics emergency workers like wildland firefighters have a right to. The Thorne Creek fire camp just southwest of Plains, more or less a tent city on steroids designed and built from the ground up to support the effort, has done all that and more for the firefighters and fire staff working on that stubborn fire for over seven weeks now. Knowing that all their basic needs are met is a big thing for workers,...

Of the 112 ballots mailed to voters within the sewer...
Two Sanders County nonprofit organizations have merged to become one entity in an effort to be more effective and to help administratively streamline operations. The Sanders County Arts Council recently dissolved and is now part of the Paradise Center, which continues under the umbrella of the Paradise Elementary School Preservation Committee. Instead of the two groups sometimes competing for fundraising money, they will now consolidate fundraising efforts for a common goal, according to Karen Thorson, the Paradise Center’s secretary. H...

Morgan has spent many years getting to know the district and its community, but says it has never felt like the right time to take on a new position...
