Dear Editor Members of Northern Lights, Inc. (NLI), our local rural electric cooperative, are circulating petitions to change two sections of NLI’s ByLaws. According to NLI’s 2016 IRS 990 form, directors typically work 5 hours a week. Partial compensation is $27,942 per year that may be taken in health insurance or cash. Each director receives, in addition, a per diem and mileage for attending meetings. Directors are elected “volunteer” trustees who should negotiate to keep member bills low. Petition one asks for a change in the Bylaws to remov...
Letter to the editor: Rumors abound in the west end of Sanders County. I can dispel one of those rumors. I am NOT suing Noxon Schools for bazillions of dollars. I did write a complaint against our School Board Chair and the Superintendent. The reason for the complaint is this: I raised my hand during the Public Comment portion of the December Board meeting. I was recognized by the Board Chair. I began reading my comment. I will mention that I had emailed the comment earlier in the day to all members of the School Board. As was heard by...
Editor, Jim Elliot’s recent op-ed explaining how we can vote against ourselves and our best interests and the article about how the community turned out to help Randy Pirker raise money for very expensive medical treatment was ironic. We applaud and support the community that comes together to help out one of our own. Can someone explain why we would not have a health care system that really took CARE of our citizens? The additional irony for this is that the representatives we vote into office are all well provided for health wise at our e...
Dear Citizens of Lake and Sanders County: Stewardship. It’s an old fashion word but at this holiday season and beyond, it still rings true with the obligations and the opportunities we have to be sure what we were given by those who passed before us is there in a useable way for those who come after us. It was made all the more real by the giants of the past generation who have passed recently for many of us. I have the honor and privilege of serving you as District Judge of the 20th Judicial District for Lake and Sanders Counties since b...
I would like to set some facts straight in regards to the letter to the editor regarding vaccines for dogs. *Parvo virus in dogs is a mutation of the actual feline distemper VIRUS, and it is not associated with the vaccine for feline distemper. Just like flu viruses can mutate in people, viruses in animals can do the same thing. *The parvo virus vaccine is a modified live virus (MLV) vaccine, not a live virus. The MLV cannot give the animal the disease since the virus has been modified. *Since veterinary clinics are very aware of the disease,...
Letter to the Editor; The December 14, 2017 Ledger article regarding rescued dogs contained an eye catching statement. “Getting your dog the proper vaccinations is really the only way to prevent having to watch your pet go through a very painful death.” Knowing that human vaccinations are falsely advertised led me to investigate dog vaccines. A few interesting facts follow: * Parvo was not experienced by dogs prior to 1970. It is believed that a Modified Live Virus (MLV) vaccine for cats lead to a mutated virus spreading to dogs. * Reg...
Editor, I have concerns about the current state of healthcare in Sanders County. I am very worried about the cost and availability of health insurance in Sanders County and in our country as a whole. How can anyone feel confident that their healthcare is sufficient or secure for even the near future? Healthcare is at the center of a political storm in Washington and the outcome of this fight is uncertain. If you are not worried, either you are lucky to have health insurance that can withstand the political knife fight, or you are living in a bu...
Appreciation: I want to acknowledge the efforts of Glen Garrison, Senator Jim Elliott, Representative Pat Ingraham, Nichol Scribner, Carol Turk and Mark Sheets that provided our 6-week Government class “Civics 101.” THANK YOU! I appreciate the professionalism and thorough presentations that enhanced my working knowledge of how our local government works. I learned a great deal. We are blessed to have such good people serving Sanders County! We are so fortunate to live here and have access to our electorate. This was a wonderful experience. I a...
This past week was a very memorable and busy week for me. The Governor called the legislature back to town on November 13 to help fix the budget deficit. I am on the house business and labor committee and we were scheduled to meet jointly with the senate business and labor. I missed the Monday meeting with a higher priority, my mother’s funeral service was that afternoon. I headed to Helena at 3 a.m. the next day for the 8 a.m. committee meeting. We met and discussed several bills. The full House Assembly was called to order at noon that d...
The recent gun-related slaughter in a Texas church reminds me that I have more than once sat in church wondering – perhaps even during the sermon – what I would do if someone walked in and started shooting. My conclusion inevitably is: nothing very effective. For the person in the pews, the tactical setup is a trap. I have further been guilty of fantasizing about what I would do in that or similar situations if I was packing my .357. Fantasy creates livelier, perhaps even heroic, reactions to a gun situation. I’ve never imagined a 95 mph car c...
Thank you so much to Julie Sol at First Security Bank for getting ‘Red Friday’ (wearing red for our veteran’s and military on Fridays) started at First Security Bank and also to Miles and Missy at Minnie’s for running with it. God bless you all. Bob and Barb Kunch, Thompson Falls...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Let me be one of the “many” to wish the “few” good wishes on the 242nd birthday of their Corps on November 10. To all of the past and those serving. Happy Birthday Marines! Al Aschenbrenner, Plains...
Editor, It makes me really sad and angry to go by Flat Iron every day and see all the garbage thrown in the little turn off there. The garbage seems to grow every week. Thank you to the kind person who picked up the tires left there. Is it so hard to drive a few miles to the solid waste? Someone ends up having to clean it up. We need to keep our Sanders County clean and not leave it up to someone else to clean your mess up. Patti Paulsen, Thompson Falls...
Dear Editor, Regards: “OUR VIEWPOINT” The country is distracted??? The only part of the country that is distracted and confused are those that attended government schools that overwhelmingly taught their victims “what” to think and not “how” to think. We, who “know how to think”, recognized the repetitive lies and controls of fake news that chose our loser candidates McCain and Romney in 2008 and 2012. When they began destroying reputations of good men in 2016, we watched; we waited. One by one, our choices were verbally destroyed by th...
Grateful to hear there are others. This letter is in response to Kathleen Stiles’s letter of last week. Kathleen, I was thrilled and impressed with your letter to the Editor! I too was saddened reading “Other Viewpoints,” 10/26. You very clearly, and with eloquence, expressed my feelings exactly. I had been stewing how to respond when your wonderful letter captured my feelings precisely. It makes me sad as well, so many persons here seem to have really missed the point of the “take a knee movement.” It is because of our flag and our Democracy t...
Editor, We are writing in support of Mark Sheets for Mayor of Thompson Falls. There is no one in this town that we feel is better suited for the position. He and Karen have been our friends for 35 years/neighbors for 32 years. Torgy and Mark taught together at TFHS for 19 years. We raised our children together - he taught our children. He has our respect and our vote. Mark was born and raised in Seeley Lake (his family worked over 60 years at Pyramid Mtn. Lumber). He earned a BS from MSU Northern. After short stints in Box Elder, Rosebud and...
Editor, I was sad and angry to read the Other Viewpoints article in the Oct. 26 issue of the Ledger. I wasn’t disturbed by the authors’ outrage at the so called disrespect of the U.S. flag by athletes kneeling during the national anthem. Many people feel very emotional about our flag. They may have served in the military or even lost friends and family in military service. And true enough, according the American Legion’s Flag Code; when the Star Spangled Banner is played, whether the U.S. flag is flying or not, civilians should stand at atten...
Editor, I, and a small group of very dedicated residents of Thompson Falls and the surrounding area, have spent the last year and a half going to city council meetings, strongly encouraging the council to enforce city ordinance 327. The ordinance outlines property owner responsibility in maintaining their property in accordance with a minimum community standard. Should the property owner choose to not maintain their property so it at least meets this standard, the ordinance specifies actions to be taken by the city to get the property into...
Editor, Who, what, when, where, why is a common standard used by news organizations when reporting the news. In a recent kerfuffle between the Thompson Falls Mayor and three city council members over the selection of a Chief of Police, the Ledger did not report on the “why” in that standard. I don’t know why the Ledger decided to pass on the “why” but I suspect it was to protect both the mayor and the nominee. The reason the three council members did not attend the council meeting to vote on selecting the new Police Chief was to avoid a q...
