  • Hot Springs battles to the bitter end

    Annie Wooden|Nov 21, 2024

When nearly half of your team is seniors, the final game of the season is bittersweet. Hot Springs' six seniors played the final football game of their high school career last weekend as the Savage Heat lost to Box Elder 57-54 in the 6-player semifinal game. "They've been in the playoffs every year, but haven't been to a semifinal game," Hot Springs Coach Jim Lawson said of the 2024 seniors. "They had been working their whole career to get to a game like this. It's not easy getting to where you...

  • MILES AND MILES ... TOGETHER

    Annie Wooden|Nov 21, 2024

Last week I wrote about the miles and miles that the Hot Springs football team has traveled this season. It's definitely a commitment to play 6-man football in Montana. Thanks to assistant coach Anderw Leichtnam for pointing out a key mistake in my map last week. The Savage Heat also traveled to Big Sandy this season. The mileage below is distances from town to town straight from Google Maps. According to Coach Jim Lawson, with stops, etc., the team went about 4,400 miles this season and racked...

  • Soccer continues training

    Ed Moreth|Nov 21, 2024

Thompson Falls High School soccer is done for the season, but the work for the players continues with an indoor program in an effort to stay sharp for next season. It's called futsal - indoor soccer modified with five players on a team, but in a smaller venue - and several players are participating in the Clark Fork Soccer Alliance program, said Nick Lawyer, head coach for the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks, which includes Plains players. He's also one of the futsal organizers. The participants meet...

    Skye Barker-Hill|Nov 14, 2024

Plains and Thompson Falls ended the volleyball season at the divisional tournament last weekend, engaging in epic battles and the teams looked to be one of two from the division to advance to state. The Lady Hawks finished third at the tournament in Anaconda, bringing home some hardware as they battled Anaconda literally almost to the last point, just missing a trip to state. The tournament started on Thursday with Florence-Carlton taking St. Ignatius in three sets, 25-14, 25-15 and 25-8....

    Annie Wooden|Nov 14, 2024

The football season just keeps getting sweeter for the Hot Springs Savage Heat. The team is headed to Box Elder this weekend for the 6-player semifinal round after beating Highwood last weekend in Hot Springs 46-8. Senior quarterback Nick McAllister is excited that the Savage Heat get to continue their season. "This team is a really close knit family. It's like a group of brothers," he explained. "This has been one of the funnest years." As last Saturday's contest in Hot Springs kicked off, it...

  • Oh, the miles you'll go

    Annie Wooden|Nov 14, 2024

Six-player football teams put on the miles during the season. With the trip to Box Elder this weekend, Hot Springs will have racked up over 3,500 miles this season on a bus. They started the season in Centerville (514 miles round trip), then went to White Sulphur Springs (532 miles), Gardiner (711), Alberton (176), Hysham (991) and now are headed to Box Elder (658). Add it all up and that's 3,582 miles. If Hot Springs wins this weekend and goes on to the state championship game, they will play...

    Skye Barker-Hill|Nov 7, 2024

It was a long road to Malta and a long road home as the football season came to an end Saturday for the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks in the first round of the Class B playoffs. The Hawks would fall 45-8 in their last game of the season, but the Hawks had much to celebrate during the season, especially for the 10 seniors. Thompson Falls ended the season with three wins and seven losses, garnering victories over Conrad, Anaconda and Whitehall. "These boys played with heart and came out fighting....

    Skye Barker-Hill|Nov 7, 2024

Noxon and Hot Springs traveled to Pablo last week for the district 13C tournament. Both teams had play-in games on Wednesday at Salish Kootenai College. Noxon would win and advance to Thursday's competition, but district would be the end of the road for both the Red Devils and the Savage Heat. Hot Springs fell to St. Regis in four sets during their play-in game. The Heat started out in the lead over the Tigers, but St. Regis was quick to bring the score to a tie at 12 points. • CLASS B'S BEST

    Skye Barker-Hill|Oct 31, 2024

She believed she could, so she did. After winning the divisional meet in Thompson Falls October 19, Plains sophomore Marina Tulloch told The Ledger she wanted to get a time of 18 minutes, 50 seconds at the state meet. She did that and more last Saturday as she won the Class B women's race, crossing the finish line at the University of Montana golf course in 18:33. Not only did Tulloch smash her own goal, but she was nearly a full minute ahead of the second-place finisher. The Plains girls finish...

  • Triumphant finale for Plains

    Ed Moreth|Oct 31, 2024

The Plains Horsemen finished the football season the same way they started it - with a big victory. The Horsemen defeated the Warriors 19-14 at Arlee on Friday afternoon. The game had been scheduled to be a night game, but because Arlee has no football field lights, it was moved to the afternoon. The game started slow for both teams. Neither could score in the first quarter. But three minutes into the second quarter, Warrior senior Isadore Mitchell caught a short pass for a touchdown. The...
