Coach Bart Haflich knows that the true tests lie ahead, but his young Noxon Red Devil boys improved to 4-0 with another pair of wins last week, stopping Troy 58-52 in Troy Friday, and fighting past Clark Fork, Idaho 64-53 in Noxon Saturday.
Looking at the possibility of improving to 6-0 with only one more game before the holidays left in 2017, the Devils have two home games this week, District 14C conference-counters with Two Eagle River Friday and St. Regis Saturday.
Although he is glad to be 4-0 Haflich knows the schedule will only get tougher from here on out, but thinks his Devils should be up to the task.
“There are tougher games ahead,” he said “but we know we can play better, too. We will find out more about ourselves these next few weeks.”
The road win in Troy was a good test for Haflich and the Devils. Trailing 28-25 at halftime, the Devils took a 36-33 lead into the fourth quarter by winning the third period 11-5.
Noxon then outscored Troy 22-18 in the fourth to take home the tight win.
“It was kind of a scramble there at the end,” Haflich offered. “We didn’t hold on to the lead as well as I would have liked down the stretch but managed to get out of there with the win.”
Logan Wood scored 21 points to lead the West End boys, Alex Currie an Rylan Weltz added 11 each, Ethan Hinrichsen eight, Owen Fisher four and Braedon Marshall three.
Alex Freund scored 13 points for Troy, Trevor Hoagland added 10 and Tyler Gromley and Jaymin Stever nine apiece.
Wood scored 20 points in the win over Clark Fork, Weltz chipped in with 16, Currie 14, Levi Brubaker 10, Marshall three and Fisher one.
Kobe Banks scored 34 points to pace the Wampus Cats in the losing effort.
