Lady Hawks top Valley girls

The thrill of victory; the agony of defeat. Coach Doree Thilmony and her Lady Hawks experienced both ends of the spectrum in games last week, falling 59-15 to powerful Florence in Florence Thursday before returning home and blasting Valley Christian 49-17 in Thompson Falls Saturday.

Thilmony thinks that Florence might be the class of the Western B division this season.

"They got up on us right away, that is a very good team," she said. "We played hard but it was hard to come back after falling that far behind."

The Lady Hawks lost the first quarter 21-5 in Florence and went into the locker room at halftime trailing 43-9.

Megan Baxter led the Lady Hawks in Florence with seven points and Maya Stiles, Belle Cooper, Haley Morgan and Jody Detlaff added two apiece.

Makenna Liles and Danielle Zahn scored 16 points each to pace Florence and Rilee Magnum added 11.

The shoe was on the other foot Saturday as it was the Hawks racing out to a big lead and cruising in for the win. The Lady Hawks never let the Eagles get into that game, building an insurmountable 27-6 lead by the half.

"Everyone scored for us in that game," Thilmony said, "and we were able to work on some different things."

Stiles scored 12 points and grabbed two steals to lead the Lady Hawks, Riley Wilson added eight points, two steals and five rebounds, Jody Detlaff six points, three steals, three assists and four rebounds, Hope Slater six points, two steals, five assists and two rebounds, Morgan four points, three steals, three assists and seven rebounds, Cooper four points, seven steals and four boards, Baxter three points, two steals and a team-high nine rebounds, Faith Frields two points, two steals, two assists and three rebounds, and Sarah Detlaff two points and five rebounds.

Kaytlin Kelly scored five points to lead Valley Christian.

Now 2-3 overall, the Lady Hawks were to have played Plains in Plains Tuesday (results of that game were not available) and will visit Troy Thursday for their first District 7B game Thursday.

"Plains is a good matchup for us and we are excited to play Troy," Thilmony said. "We can learn something from every team we play."
