Basketball can be a rough and tumble game, just ask Noxon junior Logan Wood.
Wood took a fall, hit the floor and had a Two Eagle River player fall on his head, breaking his nose and loosening several teeth, during the Red Devils’ 47-42 District 14C conference win over the Eagles in Noxon Friday.
“He got a mild concussion out of it and didn’t play anymore that night or against St. Regis the next,” coach Bart Haflich said. “We should get him back this week but it turned out to be good for us playing without him against Two Eagle. Our younger kids had to step up and get it done without him.”
The Devils did indeed get it done, breaking away from a 23-23 tie at halftime to post the win.
Rylan Weltz led the winners with 14 points for Noxon, Alex Currie added eight, Wood seven (before hitting the floor), Owen Fisher, Ethan Hinrichsen and Braedon Marshall five apiece and Levi Brubaker three.
Bronco Branson scored 11 points for Two Eagle, Kesean Burke 10 and Brendan McDonald nine.
“It was a pretty physical game,” Haflich said, “and a good one for us to get through and put under our belt.”
The Devils ran their season record to an impressive 6-0 with a 52-24 win over St. Regis, also in Noxon, Saturday.
Only a sophomore but already one of the better players in 14C, Weltz led Noxon to that victory with 24 points, Currie and Marshall added eight each, Hinrichsen six, Aidan Galloway three, and Fisher, Brubaker and Edison VanVleet one apiece.
Nic Day scored 14 points to pace St. Regis.
The Devils face another District 14C encounter to wrap up play before the holiday break, trekking to Charlo Thursday to take on the host Vikings.
“This game should give us a better idea of where we sit in the district,” Haflich said. “Charlo is always a tough place to play, we look forward to seeing how we do there.”
