Ice cold Red Devils fall to Vikes, Lady Vikings

Cold beginnings led to sad endings for both Noxon basketball teams in a boy-girl doubleheader played at Charlo Thursday.

In remarkably cold starts for teams with hot nicknames like the Red Devils, the Noxon boys fell behind 14-2 after the first eight minutes in their game with Charlo, while the Lady Devils fared no better, dropping back 15-2 to the Lady Vikings after one quarter in that game.

Both deficits proved to be too much to overcome as the Noxon boys lost 52-35 and the Noxon girls fell 46-18 in the District 14C conference-counting contests.

Coach Bart Haflich and his Noxon squads will look to get back on track, hopefully with early offense in both games, when they host Sanders County rival Hot Springs in another boy-girl doubleheader in Noxon Jan. 5.

Rylan Weltz counted a game-high 19 points to lead the Devil boys in Charlo, Logan Wood added six, Ethan Hinrichsen and Alex Currie four each and Levi Brubaker one.

Tyson Petticrew (13 points), Landers Smith and Toby Odom (10 apiece) and Garett Vaughan (nine) led Charlo.

Rylan Weltz’s sister Delaney Weltz led the Lady Devils in their game at Charlo with nine points, Anna Kasier chipped in six, Cory Brodmerkle two and Kristin Brown one.

Carlee Fryberger scored 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for coach Bret Thompson’s Lady Vikings.
