A SLIPPERY BEGINNING - The 2018 New Year's Day Fun Run was ran on snow-packed, icy roads Monday, and the runners were forced to use caution right from the start as illustrated by this photo. Participation numbers for the annual race were likely affected by the icy conditions.
A balmy 17 degrees welcomed 39 runners who participated in the 19th annual New Year's Day Fun Run in Thompson Falls on New Year's Day.
This year's run was a cold, windy and slick one. At the start line, a few runners fell due to the icy roads and there were a quite a few slips and falls along the course. Not surprisingly, there were no records set and it was a slow going race for the most part.
Top overall finishers for the 2K race were Rachel Ribeiro finishing up first with a time of 12:27. The top male and female finishers in the 5K was Logan Naegeli (21:00) and Josey Neesvig (27:42).
The run originated in 2000, when the Naegeli family invented the run as a fund raiser for Clark Fork Running Club. Thompson Falls cross country and track coach Sarah Naegeli, along with her son Logan, have organized and participated in 18 races, having missed only one year.
Mark and Karen Sheets are also die hard New Year Day Fun Run participants. Naegeli stated that the Sheets "have probably done half of them."
Funds from the race go toward Clark Fork Valley Running Club scholarships, which are awarded to student athletes who participate in running sports.
