Independently owned since 1905
There are still quite a few pages to turn on the calendar before Sanders County Fair takes place, but 4-H steer members are already hard at work. Saturday morning 4-H steer owners met at Havens Stable in Whitepine to have their contenders weighed and tagged.
All 4-H market livestock members must have their animals tagged and weighed prior to fair time. This ensures members continue to prepare the same animal for fair, and also gives a foundation for finances and calculating growth throughout the project. At the end of every livestock market project, members calculate what the cost per pound was to raise their livestock.
Corey Guenzler, 4-H Livestock Committee Chairman, and Richard Jackson, Steer Superintendent, tagged five steers at Havens Stable on Saturday. According to Juli Thurston, MSU Extension Agent, an additional 16 steers were tagged Sunday in Hot Springs.
Swine, goats, and sheep going to 4-H market auction are tagged and weighed the early part of June.
