Track and field is alive and well in Noxon.
Coach Matt Havens, who is joined this year in guiding the Red Devil thinclads by Scott Richardson, reports that he has 19 athletes (11 boys and eight girls) out this spring and that things have been going well so far.
“Our boys are spread out across most of the events while our girls are challenging in each other in some of the same events,” he said. “And all of them are competing very well, getting mentally tougher with each meet.”
Both Noxon squads competed in the Libby Invitational Saturday, with the girls scoring 37 points and the boys 36.
The Lady Red Devils scored a lot of points in the throwing events as Delaney Weltz gunned down second place in the discus, third place in the shot put and sixth in the javelin, Kristina Brown won second place in the javelin and Cory Brodmerkle took fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus.
In other venues, Anna Kaiser placed fifth in the triple jump and in the 800 meters, Phayln Fickas ran down sixth in the 3,200 meters and Kali Murray sixth in the 300 meter hurdles.
The Lady Devils’ 4 by 100 and 4 by 400 meter relays placed fourth and fifth in those races.
With the boys, Edison VanVleet won second place in the 110 meter hurdles and fourth in the 300s, Levi Brubaker claimed second place in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump, Alex Currie ran to fifth place in the 3,200 meters and Cody Cable won sixth in the 400 meters.
Rylan Weltz scored third place in the shot put and Aaron Raynor fourth, in addition to taking fith in the discus.
In addition to those athletes already mentioned, Aiden Galloway, Matthew Kaiser, Avery Vogel, Silas Hay and Jared Webly are on the Noxon boys’ team, and Chloe Scarlett and Alivia Hill are on the girls’ squad.
Havens said the Devils will participate in two meets this week, in the Thompson Falls Invitational Thursday and in the Seeley-Swan Invitational in Missoula Saturday.
