School elections this week included school board positions in Thompson Falls and Noxon, and levy measures in the Trout Creek and Noxon school districts.
In Noxon, Lars Swanson and Justine Fanning were elected to the school board with 192 and 168 votes, respectively, and David Pafford (who ran unopposed) retained his seat. The fourth position is a Noxon School Board representing Trout Creek position. No one filed for the position on the Trout Creek ballot, so it was for write-in candidates only. There was a three-way tie for this position between Sandy Davis, Justine Fanning and Gene Jopling, each receiving two votes. Sanders County election staff will review operational procedures with the school on how to proceed.
On the Thompson Falls School Board, Jeneese Baxter (682 votes) and Sandra Muster (586) were elected to fill open positions. Abby Sund Harnett (522) had also filed for one of the three-year positions. Of the 2,824 registered voters, 950 ballots were submitted in Thompson Falls.
The Noxon ballots included a Noxon High School technology levy seeking $15,000 a year for five years. The high school levy passed 412 to 280, resulting in an increase in taxes of approximately $1.16 on a home with a market value of $100,000. The elementary school technology levy did not pass, losing support by only eight votes (185 in support, 193 against).
Trout Creek Elementary School will see a $40,000 technology and depreciation fund levy for one year to create a computer lab at the school. Trout Creek School District has 901 registered voters, 398 ballots were cast; 239 votes for, 158 against.
Elections in other school districts were canceled as not enough candidates filed.
In Hot Springs, two three-year positions were open, and Lenny Page and Dirk Roosma filed for those spots. In Plains, two positions were up for election. Polly Icenoggle and Travis Pfister were the two candidates. In Trout Creek, current school board members Elizabeth Stender and Penny James filed for the two open positions.
Next up on the election calendar is the general primary on June 5 for state and federal races.
