Red Devils shine bright in 14C meet

The Noxon Red Devil track and field teams made quite a splash in last week’s two-day District 14C meet in Missoula, winning a strong second place in final boys team standings and pulling down a third place trophy with the girls.

Coach Matt Havens and his Devil thinclads now head to Frenchtown for the Western C divisional meet Thursday and Friday, to be held in conjunction with the Western B divisional meet.

“I am pretty proud of these kids,” Havens said. “Winning second and third in the district with only 10 and six athletes on each team is quite an accomplishment.”

Led by event winners Levi Brubaker (triple jump and long jump), Rylan Weltz (shot put and discus), Aaron Raynor (javelin) and Cody Cable (400 meters), the Red Devil boys racked up 145 team points to finish second behind Charlo (208), but ahead of 14C brethren Plains (102), Hot Springs (28), Arlee (21) and St. Regis (6).

For the Lady Red Devils, Delaney Weltz won the discus for Noxon’s only event championship but several other Lady Devils scored well in a bunch of events to spur the Noxon girls to 89 team points and third place. Charlo won the girls meet with 212 points, Plains was second with 110, Arlee fourth with 53 and Hot Springs fifth with 8.

Brubaker’s winning triple jump of 42 feet, 9.5 inches not only earned him the 14C title in the event, it also exceeded the minimum qualifying distance for State C triple jump standards and qualifies him for state, regardless of how he performs at the Western C this week. The mark is also officially a new Noxon school record in the triple jump, Havens said.

Brubaker also won the long jump with a fine effort of 20 feet, .75 inches, and placed sixth in the 100 meter dash.

Rylan Weltz won the discus with a best throw of 118-2.5 and the shot put

with a best put of 40 feet even, in addition to taking third in the javelin and fifth in the 200 meters.

Raynor won the javelin with a best spear throw of 130-9.5, besides taking second lace in the shot put and third in the discus.

Cable ran down first place in the 400 meters (56.09 seconds), second place in the 200 (24.77) and fourth in the 100 (12.28).

Alex Currie placed in four events, taking second in the 3200 meters, fourth in the 800, fifth in the 1600 and fourth in the shot put, and Edison VanVleet placed in three, winning third in the 800, fourth in the 110 meter hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Jared Webley placed fifth in the 800 and sixth in the 400, and Avery Vogel won fifth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

The Devil boys took second in the 1600 meter relay and fourth in the 400 relay.

For the Lady Devils, Delaney Weltz not only won the discus, she placed second in the shot put and in the javelin, while teammate Cory Brodmerkle won third in the discus and fifth in the shot.

Alivia Hill paced the Devils in the sprints with third place medals in the 100 and 200 meters and Kali Murray won fifth place in both of those races, in addition to winning fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Kristina Brown claimed second place in the 800 meters and fifth in the discus, and Phalyn Fickas ran to second place points in the 3200 and third place in the 1600.

Both Lady Devil relays won third place in those races.
