Local cowgirls working to help kick cancer

“I just couldn’t let it go,” emphasized cancer survivor and Trout Creek resident Roberta Smith. “It is personal, I have to give back!”

Smith is joined by Leanne Smith, Linda Barnes, Cathy Johnson and Alexis Dean to form Cowgirls Kickin’ Cancer (CKC). “We are just a group of ladies who want to raise awareness of cancer,” Smith explained. “In the last eight years, we have raised $43,000.” Through CKCs partnership with non-profit Sanders County Cancer Network, they have been able to pay forward every penny to cancer victims throughout the county.

Unfortunately, CKC has seen a decline in volunteers, but they are not letting that get the best of them. The group is planning a fun-filled summer of events beginning in June and is looking for participants and volunteers.

On June 23, Sanders County Rocky Ridge Saddle Club will partner-up with CKC for their third annual O’moksee (patterned horse racing) event being held at 89 Government Mountain Road in Noxon. The event is family friendly and free to attend. There will be informational booths, burgers and beverages, a crazy costume contest and games for those on horseback as well as on their own two feet.

Smith commented that the famous “Dolly Parton Race” will be one of the contests at the O’moksee. “There will be water balloons held by a huge brassiere that has to be worn around the arena and kept intact,” she laughed, as this game is a great reminder of the importance of staying up-to-date with breast health exams; early detection is key.

“We are looking for vendors, donations, and contributions in our effort to raise awareness” at this event. The fun is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. More information and registration forms can be found on the “Cowgirls Kickin’ Cancer” Facebook page. Leanne Smith may also be contacted at 847-2363 for more information.

Look for CKC throughout the summer at the annual Trout Creek Huckleberry Festival and Sanders County Fair. There will be informational booth set up and fun events for all members of the family.

Powder River Rodeo will be collaborating with CKC during the fair by giving demonstrations on what goes on behind the chutes at the rodeo. CKC will also offer three activities including a ride on a bucking bull and/or horse while in the chute, stick pony barrel racing and calf roping. All events are scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 1.

“We make these events family friendly because cancer doesn’t just effect the individual. It effects loved ones, friends and it shows who is really willing to stick by your side,” Smith said.

CKC are open to anyone willing to step forward and help make a difference in the lives of those touched by cancer. “We really are hoping to pull in more numbers,” Smith commented. She can be reached by phoning 827-9648.
