Students from the third through fifth grades showed off their skills at a four-day basketball camp that was held in the high school gym. High school basketball coaches Jake Mickelson and Doree Thilmony coached the players on fundamentals and sharpening their skills with dribbling and shooting drills. The players also had the opportunity to compete against each other in shooting drills and a 3-on-3 tournament.
Aubrey Baxter was victorious in the Hot Shot shooting competition and the free-throw contest. The team she was on also won the 3-on-3 tournament. Baxter said that she had a lot of fun at the camp. When asked what her favorite activity was, she answered that "it's hard to decide but I'd have to say the Hot Shot competition and the 3-on-3 tournament."
The players all received a shirt at the end of the camp. Additional prizes such as Gatorade, water bottles and basketballs were given to the players who won the shooting drills. Thilmony thought that the camp went great and it was a good experience for the kids.
"Having the high schoolers to help out is really nice because they are good role models and mentors who have a lot to share with the younger kids," Thilmony said.
The camp had a good turn out all four days, with some players even showing up from second grade.
