The big games just keep coming, and we’re not even halfway through September yet.
The Hot Springs Savage Heat, fresh off a 50-18 win over previously unbeaten West Yellowstone in Hot Springs Friday, face another game with Western C playoff implications this Friday as they go on the road to take on Noxon.
Now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in Western C action, the Heat will try to get past the Noxon Red Devils, who fell 32-27 to White Sulphur Springs in Noxon Friday (see other story), one week after the Heat lost to White Sulphur 20-18 on the road. The Devils are also 1-1 in Western C play.
With both Sanders County teams now trailing 3-0 White Sulphur Springs in the race to reach the State C 6-Man playoffs, neither can afford to lose many more conference games from here on out.
“We knew before the season started that things could end up being decided early in the Western C, this is a big game for both teams,” Hot Springs coach Jim Lawson said. “Noxon is definitely a very good team. They have good size and are very athletic and are doing some good things on both sides of the ball. We expect a battle Friday night.”
The game with West Yellowstone was a good one for the Savage Heat, especially on the heels of the tough road loss in White Sulphur Springs the week before.
The Wolverines scored first on a run by Kyle Watt but the Heat quickly answered with three touchdowns of their own in the first quarter, and extended the Hot Springs lead to 36-12 by halftime.
Quarterback Brandon Knudsen completed 10 of 15 passes for 151 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Heat offense, Tyler Carr caught six of those passes and scored three touchdowns, Tyler Knudsen rushed the ball 10 times for 80 yards and scored on a 24-yard run, Kyle Lawson caught the other touchdown pass thrown by Brandon Knudsen and Luke Waterbury scored Hot Springs’ last touchdown on a one-yard run in the third quarter.
Carr led the Heat defense with 10 tackles, Brandon Knudsen had five tackles and two pass interceptions, Waterbury pulled down four tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks, and Kyle Lawson recovered two fumbles and had two more quarterback sacks.
Miquel Salinas scored the other two touchdowns for West Yellowstone, which fell to 2-1 with the loss.
