Horsemen rocked by Victor Pirates

Some days are diamonds, some days are stone…

The Plains Horsemen’s afternoon 8-Man football game in Victor – which they lost to the homestanding Pirates 44-34 – was a rocky one for coach Eddie Fultz and his boys.

“We scored some points but gave up some points,” Fultz said. “It seemed like we dug ourselves some holes that we could not climb out of and Victor took advantage. Then we caught a few bad breaks at inopportune times as well.”

Fultz said the Horsemen gave up a few touchdowns and fell behind early but were battling back into contention by the time halftime was about to roll around.

“We were driving deep in Victor’s territory, but they got a pick-six on the last play of the first half,” he said. “And that really took the wind out of our sails, and put us down by two touchdowns again heading into the half when it looked like we were about to tie it up.”

Now out of the playoff picture, the Horsemen will host Clark Fork, the sports co-op between Superior and Alberton, this Friday night in Plains. Coach Jeff Schultz’s Mountain Cats registered an insanely high-scoring 94-50 win over Seeley-Swan in Seeley Lake Friday.

Clark Fork scored an amazing 66 points in the first half alone against Seeley.

“The are putting up some big numbers, nobody has really stopped them yet,” Fultz said. “On the other hand, they have also been giving up a lot of points. This game has the makings of a shootout, but our defense will have to get some stops if we hope to win.”

Fultz said the focus is shifting to the future in the closing games of the ’18 campaign.

“We want this team to leave a lasting legacy as we look ahead to next year,” he said, “and that means building on some positive things that we are able to accomplish this fall.”

Fultz said the work on next year’s team has already begun. “We started three sophomores on the offensive and defensive line in Victor,” he said. “I see a lot of promise in our younger kids, we will have something to build on with next year.”

Fultz said the Horsemen JV defeated the Victor JV in convincing fashion in Plains Monday.

Individual statistics and scoring plays were not available from the Victor game Saturday.
