TF harriers to host Western B

Let the run fun begin!

The high school cross country season begins to end this week with the running of the Western B divisional meet at River's Bend Golf Course west of Thompson Falls Thursday, with racing set to begin at 1 p.m.

"With the solid times we ran in the wind and cold at Mountain West (in Missoula two weeks ago) and the nice, quick relay legs at Eureka (last Thursday), I'm really looking forward to some great racing at divisionals," coach Sarah Naegeli said. "So now the fun begins!"

After a season of running and training and then running some more, the finish line is now in sight for area harriers. Runners who qualify at divisional move on the Montana All-Class Cross Country State Meet in Missoula for the final racing of the season Oct. 20.

The Hawks wrapped up the regular season at the Eureka Invitational last week. "It was a wonderful course to run on with lots of rolling hills," Naegeli said.

The high school event was a mixed relay with two runners from each team teaming up to run two laps of 1.5 miles each. Justin Morgan and Josey Neesvig teamed to run the fastest time for the Hawks in Eureka, clocking out in 36:46 to win sixth place.

"Justin and Josey have been focused and dedicated all season," Naegeli said of her top boy and girl runners. "(Eureka) was a great format for this point in the season. It changes things up a bit and we had some great results and a few nice surprises as Ben Croft, Roni Hanks and Marc Boyd had some promising time drops."

Wyatt Griffith and Rachel Ribeiro (40:45), Erik Melendez and Megan Baxter (43:48), Nick Viera and Roni Hanks (49:56) and Croft and Reagan Hanks (54:41) were the other teams running for the Hawks in Eureka. Ben Beauchman and Boyd also ran two legs of the relay but with no partners.

Coach Sarah Stover's junior high team completed its season in Eureka, and had what Naegeli called a "fantastic end to their season" on the 1.5 mile course.

Hattie Neesvig led the junior high Hawk girls with a time of 9:43 to win the race, and Faith Palmer finished second (10:36), Madison Toyias (13th in 13:14), Tiana Goatley (14th in 13:57) and Kaylei Hinck (15th in 16:30) also registered strong times.

Cael Thilmony led the junior high Hawk boys with a second place finish and a time of 9:47 and JJ Fields took 16th in 12:19.
